Responsibilities:
The Diagnostic Development and Integration (DD&I) Group at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), University of Rochester, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the development and operation of advanced diagnostic instrumentation for use in the Omega Laser Facility. The DD&I Group collaborates with scientists on hundreds of sophisticated experiments per year on the various laser systems at the laboratory. The successful candidate will interface directly with scientists, engineers, and technicians throughout LLE, as with external visiting scientists. The position requires solid mechanical, laboratory, organizational, and computational skills, as well as the ability to work independently and communicate effectively. The successful candidate will lead development efforts, including project management, for new instruments to enable LLE’s long-term scientific mission and support the operation and maintenance of the existing scientific instrumentation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
+ Support the operation of equipment and instrumentation for laser physics experiments Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults of installed instrumentation
+ Perform preventative maintenance as required
+ Create technical documentation and process capture for training technicians
+ Generate mechanical drawings as necessary for creation of technical documentation
+ Serve as project manager for modification and qualification of new equipment
+ Support engineers in design and installation of new equipment
+ Plan and manage equipment usage and consumable inventory
+ Some second shift work is required to support operations
REQUIRED SKILLS
+ Strong mechanical aptitude
+ Ability to work in a cleanroom environment
+ Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
+ High degree of manual dexterity
+ Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software as needed Ability to qualify as a NYS Radiological Worker (certification provided at LLE)
PREFERRED SKILLS
+ Applicants should possess a technical background, with experience working with optical, electrical, and/or mechanical systems including vacuum and pressurized gas systems. DOE Q-Cleared or ability to obtain Q clearance
+ Proficiency reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical schematics
+ Technical writing experience
+ Familiarity with High Speed Photographic equipment or other high-speed electro-optical devices
QUALIFICATIONS
+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar and 1 year of relevant experience required
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
