    WSP USA hosts hundreds of interns across the United States to gain hands-on, meaningful work experience to enhance their education and professional aptitude. Our interns gain exposure to real projects while working side by side with senior staff. Through our Developing Professionals Network, interns gain mentorship, networking opportunities and lifelong career connections.

     

    Our Federal Planning Team is seeking a full-time **Federal Planning Intern - Summer 2026** to work out of our **Arlington, VA** office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program.

     

    This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12-week program scheduled to start on May 18th, 2026. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.

    Your Impact

    + Support a variety of Federal Planning tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.

    + Learn basic principles of Federal Planning.

    + Assist the Federal Planning Team on a variety of federal DoD planning projects in the U.S., Europe, and East Asia, including installation master planning, facility planning, airfield planning, electric vehicle transition studies.

    + Participate in a fast-paced collaborative planning charrette process on site with clients and customers.

    + Use strong graphics, writing, research, and data analysis skills to help develop captivating planning reports describing innovative planning solutions.

    + Assist with graphic and mapping production and presentation material development.

    + Support the Federal Planning Team with document production, mapping, site planning, and charrette facilitation.

    + Independently evaluate and research technical criteria applicable to each project.

    + Ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously and communicate effectively to deconflict competing priorities and schedule deadlines.

    + Under direct supervision, assist with preparing site plans, master plans, technical reports and/or development standards for assigned projects, with a particular emphasis on regulatory compliance.

    + Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation of technical memos, meeting minutes, transmittals, presentations, and other written materials.

    + Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate data analysis and project reporting.

    + Assist with basic professional land/urban planning work to gain further information on a particular problem or issue, verify site characteristics, and/or to assist with planning for future needs affecting land use, development, utilities, infrastructure, construction, and/or transportation to control and guide development and renewal.

    + Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, models, infographics, and 3D illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.

    + Review training materials, project examples, and other industry guidance to ensure technical competency and high work quality.

    + Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

    + Perform additional responsibilities as required.

    + Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.

     

    Who You Are

    Required Qualifications

    + Actively enrolled in an accredited Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2026 or later.

    + Must be 18 or older.

    + Demonstrates interest in federal military planning, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.

    + Ability to develop accurate and detailed maps and site plans with all required information, as provided by project managers.

    + Analytical skills, and familiarity with research techniques for local/regional geography, site planning, and ecology to identify development constraints and deconflict project sites.

    + Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.

    + Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

    + Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team of planners, engineers, architects, and other technical experts to meet project objectives.

    + Basic proficiency with business technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

    + Ability to work flexibly to meet project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

    + Ability to travel, including overnight trips and international travel.

    + Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

    + Please note that due to client requirements, US citizenship is required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Actively enrolled in an accredited Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or related, Master’s or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2026 or later.

    + Proficiency with AutoCAD/Civil3D and ArcGIS.

    + Proficiency with Adobe suite, particularly Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

    + Prior experience with site design and incorporating public feedback into site layouts.

    + Experience developing construction documents and/or planning reports.

    + Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus

     

    Compensation **:**

     

    Expected Salary: $20.87 - $29.73 per hour

     

    WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
