    What Your Job Will Be Like:

    The Inertial Systems Department is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a strong interest and enthusiasm for sensor characterization, mechanical development and integration, aimed at various hardware projects. The ideal candidate will collaborate effectively with the organization's technical specialists in electronics, mechanical engineering, and software development. This role will concentrate on testing, analyzing, and integrating complex inertial sensor systems for diverse applications, from initial subsystem characterization to final delivery for customer use.

    On any given day, the selected candidate could perform these activities:

    + Mechanical and Electronic hardware -

    + Radiation shielding design

    + Materials characterization

    + Component Integration

    + Testing and analysis of accelerometers, gyroscopes, IMUs, inertial subsystems

    + Software -

    + MATLAB code development and execution for analysis

    + Develop software for data acquisition and analysis applications

    + Finite element analysis

    + Environments modeling

    + Documentation

    + Review datasheets/literature for electronic components and inertial sensors

    + Develop analysis and presentation material

    + Track lessons learned content

    + Teaming -

    + Interact with technologists and other engineers in pursuit of prototype development and testing

    + Provide briefings to peers and customers for technical interchange purposes

    Salary Range:

    $99,400 - $193,600

     

    *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

    Qualifications We Require:

    + A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

    + The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

    Qualifications We Desire:

    The ideal R&D Mechanical Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

    + Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).

    + Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

    + Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.

    Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

    + A proven track record of conducting research/development within a team environment from concept to delivery.

    + Ex perience with SolidWorks or CREO mechanical design and modeling software tools.

    + Experience with MATLAB, Ansys modeling and analysis tools.

    + Familiarity with developing software for test apparatus control, data capture, analysis.

    + Experience with inertial sensors and magnetometers

    + Experience with environmental testing and analysis - 3-axis motion, centrifuge, vibration, vacuum, radiation.

    + Experience with designing environmental test fixtures and shielding for components

    + Experience with the Sandia National Labs Nuclear Weapon Product Realization Process.

    + Utilize AI for design expediency.

    About Our Team:

    Sandia's Department 5326 - Inertial Systems is dedicated to developing and delivering cutting-edge sensor and electronic subsystems for missile systems, air-delivered applications, and ground navigation. Our work involves advancing current design initiatives and creating prototype and surrogate items, all of which undergo rigorous testing and characterization in thermal, vibration, shock, various motion, electromagnetic, and radiation environments. The organization excels in engineering development for the interface, testing, and evaluation of inertial sensors, ensuring their integration into complex electronic and mechanical systems. Our team possesses a diverse range of skills, including expertise in electronics engineering, software design, mechanical modeling and design, and electro-mechanical fabrication. Our product development process encompasses conceptualization, requirements gathering, modeling, detailed design, fabrication, system integration, testing, and data analysis, all aimed at delivering reliable solutions to our various customers.

    Posting Duration:

    Security Clearance:

    Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
