**Description** The Structural Section Manager is responsible for the managerial direction of substation structural staff in the Northeast Region (NER) Structural Department within the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice. The Section Manager will lead their section in a dynamic manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service.The Section Manager will be located in the Wallingford office and will have direct reports in multiple branch offices in the NER territory. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by senior management. Fostering Culture
+ Advocate for and drive initiatives for the BMcD Live Safer key objective within the T&D NER structural department and within T&D NER.
+ Support and champion diversity and inclusion initiatives from our clients and within Burns & McDonnell.
+ Lead structural staff with a focus on creating an atmosphere and environment for all.
+ Develop and foster an innovative culture that challenges the norm and utilizes tools, technology, and processes to drive continuous improvement and efficiency. Recommend changes in basic structure and organization of the group to the Structural Department Manager to ensure the effective fulfillment of department objectives
Collaboration
+ Lead substation structural design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for all project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.
+ Work closely with project teams to ensure deliverables and services are being provided to both internal and external client satisfaction.
+ Work closely with project teams to ensure that projects are following internal QA/QC guidelines.
+ Perform QA/QC reviews of studies, reports, and design packages.
+ Provide leadership, guidance, mentorship and instruction to staff members.
+ Regularly meet and correspond with internal and external clients, subcontractors, and project personnel outside the organization.
+ Coordinate and promote structural design consistency and aptitudes across all NER offices.
+ Proactively share information with the staff and continually look for ways to enhance communication within the department. Assist structural staff in developing and growing relationships with internal contacts, internal technical experts, and external vendors.
+ Develop and establish a personal network of internal relationships with BMcD’s structural groups and NER T&D team.
+ Make intentional efforts to maintain personal technical proficiency and connection to the core business line.
+ Identify training needs and support training programs in collaboration with WHQ and other regionals.
+ Travel regularly to NER offices to meet with structural department personnel.
+ Coordinate shared client work with other T&D departments and regional offices.
Recruiting, Interviewing, Hiring & Onboarding
+ Prioritize recruitment and proactively recruit experienced hires and new grads with the use of internal and external networks, online tools, references & HR support.
+ Evaluate and assess new candidates via interviews and provide feedback and/or recommendations to the Structural Department Manager.
+ Coordinate, schedule, and participate in new hire onboarding and the new hire training curriculum for new staff including experienced hires, new graduates, interns and transfers.
+ Support Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.
Career Development & Performance Management
+ Meet with each assigned staff member monthly, at a minimum, to discuss staff member’s work-life experience, performance successes and development items, and training needs, all with a focus on continuous improvement and retention. Monitor the progress of assigned staff on program assignments. Develop and maintain a strong focus on the retention of staff.
+ Request and obtain performance feedback from each staff member’s peers, project leadership and client (if necessary) to prepare each staff member’s annual performance appraisal and performance rating. Meet with each staff member to provide performance feedback, appraisal, and development items.
+ Communicate with T&D NER Structural Department leadership and provide a summary of staff performance, needs, and development items on an on-going basis.
+ Promote, monitor and achieve on-time completion of all training assignments for assigned staff.
+ Provide training, mentoring, and coaching to structural staff, both assigned to the Section Manager and within T&D NER, in key technical areas including:
+ Project engineering (scope, budget, cost, schedule, risk management)
+ Structural Design aptitudes
+ Ensure corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented which includes coordinating with other regional departments and Project Managers to assign quality control reviewers.
+ Advocate for staff by listening to their short and long-term goals and provide guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.
+ Collaborate with Human Resources and the Structural Department Manager to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement.
+ Participate in Knowledge Capture and Lessons Learned reviews to identify procedural and other issues. Assist in driving necessary changes to procedures.
Resource Management
+ Establish and proactively communicate to assigned staff the vision, expectations, requirements, processes, and guidelines to meet department, global practice, regional and company objectives.
+ Regularly review team utilization of assigned staff to make sure employees have a clear path of development and support and are adequately leveraged and empowered to their strengths and skillsets.
+ Oversight and management of chargeability and proper investment of overhead labor and costs.
+ Monitor progress on projects and provide input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, and quality.
+ Coordinate work in the department which includes making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
+ Evaluate project opportunities and facilitate go/no-go decisions in cooperation with NER leadership and T&D practice leadership based on resource availability.
Business Line Support
+ Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
+ Support sales and marketing activities for projects & pursuits. Responsible for client maintenance and coordination. Assist with and lead technical aspects of proposal efforts including hours estimates.
+ Serve as the technical advisor, provide input and evaluation on structural engineering projects.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor's degree in a related field.
+ Minimum 5 years of Structural Engineering Experience.
+ Other qualifications include:
+ Registration as a professional engineer, or currently pursuing professional registration required.
+ Demonstrated excellent written & verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
+ Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
+ Possess strong strategic perspective of the industry.
+ Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management and clients.
+ Ability to solve multi-layered complex resource, projects and/or performance challenges.
+ Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise and discernment.
+ Proven collaboration, facilitation and organization problem solving skills in previous roles.
+ Demonstrated technical ability in structural engineering design.
+ Proven leadership in developing and implementing vision that has brought positive impact is preferred.
+ Previous personnel management experience is preferred.
Compensation
$110,000.00-360,000.00 Yearly
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
