Are you passionate about protecting public health and ensuring the quality and safety of environmental laboratory testing across Minnesota? The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking a dedicated leader to serve as the MN Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (MNELAP) Supervisor. In this role, you will provide strategic, technical, and administrative leadership to ensure Minnesota’s environmental laboratories operate safely, consistently, and in compliance with state and federal standards. You will oversee a multidisciplinary team, direct accreditation and regulatory activities, guide enforcement actions, and collaborate with statewide partners to protect public health. The Supervisor also shapes program policy, manages budgets and fee-supported activities, supports rulemaking and legislative initiatives, and advances emerging environmental health priorities such as contaminants of emerging concern.
Primary Responsibilities:
+ Provide leadership and supervision to MNELAP staff to ensure effective performance, professional development, and compliance with state personnel policies.
+ Oversee daily operations and policy implementation for the Environmental Lab Accreditation Unit to ensure consistent, high-quality accreditation and regulatory activities.
+ Direct compliance inspections, enforcement actions, and technical decisions to ensure regulated laboratories meet statutory and rule requirements.
+ Manage program planning, budgeting, fee operations, and resource allocation to support efficient and accountable program delivery.
+ Represent MNELAP and collaborate with internal and external partners to advance policy development, scientific guidance, stakeholder engagement, and rulemaking effort
_This position is currently eligible for up to 50% hybrid telework for applicants residing in Minnesota or a bordering state within 50 miles of the work location. Work locations will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out one of the following MDH district office locations: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Marshall, Bemidji, or Fergus Falls._
Minimum Qualifications
_The following minimum qualifications must be clearly demonstrated on the applicant’s resume/application to be considered for the position:_
Four years of experience reviewing scientific or technical data and applying environmental or public health regulations to ensure safe and compliant laboratory or program operations.
AND
Demonstrated leadership experience such as:
Coaching, mentoring, developing and/or staff while building relationships.
Experience leading a new initiative that includes integration with numerous partners.
Demonstrated planning skills sufficient to plan and organize large projects, prioritize, and make recommendations or decisions on the direction of a project.
_A Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, microbiology, public health or closely related may substitute for one year of experience; a Master’s degree in these fields may substitute for 18 months of experience; and a Doctorate degree in these fields may substitute for two years of experience_ .

+ Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and evaluate program policies and procedures to ensure alignment with organizational and public health objectives.
+ Experience effectively communicating complex scientific or regulatory information to diverse audiences, including stakeholders, regulated parties, and the public.
+ Proven ability to prioritize and manage competing projects, budgets, and resources while maintaining program efficiency and compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Advanced degree in environmental health, public health, microbiology, or a closely related field.
+ Experience supervising staff in an environmental laboratory, public health, or regulatory program.
+ Knowledge of environmental laboratory accreditation standards, regulatory compliance, and enforcement procedures.
+ Experience developing and implementing program policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
+ Ability to clearly communicate complex scientific or regulatory information to diverse audiences, including stakeholders, regulated parties, and the public.
+ Experience leading collaborative projects or initiatives involving multiple internal and external partners.
