Director of Business Development (Mergers & Acquisitions) – Product
Job Description:
The Director of Business Development (M&A) – Product will play a pivotal role in identifying, engaging, and nurturing highly strategic M&A opportunities. Working in close partnership with the Corporate Development (CD) team, this role will strengthen connectivity across the Product organization and country Managing Directors (MDs) to drive Sage’s strategic ambitions. The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting the entire M&A lifecycle, from market research and ideation to relationship management and early-stage diligence, ensuring Sage remains at the forefront of innovation and market leadership.
This is a hybrid role: 3 days per week in Atlanta PCM Office
Key Responsibilities:
• Forge strong, collaborative relationships with Corporate Development, engaging in daily, weekly, and monthly interactions, including participation in joint calls, trade shows, and strategic meetings.
• Support and provide input into the maintenance of the M&A pipeline, ensuring transparency and alignment with CD, who will retain pipeline ownership.
• Maintain full visibility of all M&A activities within Sage and actively participate in weekly CD calls to ensure up-to-date knowledge and seamless collaboration.
• Lead market research and ideation in key M&A areas, dedicating up to 20% of time to exploring new and emerging verticals (e.g., government technology), as agreed with CD.
• Take ownership of target relationships, establishing an agreed cadence of check-ins and nurturing these relationships through the deal lifecycle.
• Support the scheduling of meetings, creation of agendas, and active participation in early-stage discussions and preliminary due diligence activities.
• Work across all Business Units (Accounting and Accountants, Financials and ERPs, HR & Payroll, Platform) to ensure comprehensive M&A support and alignment with product strategy.
Qualifications:
• 8-10 years experience in similar role required
• Director or VP-level professional with substantial experience in at least one of the following areas: start-ups, venture capital, growth equity, consulting, or investment banking.
• Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and nurture M&A opportunities in a complex, fast-moving environment.
• Strong understanding of the product lifecycle and experience collaborating with product, technology, and business leaders.
• Exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder management skills, with experience working in a matrixed, cross-functional setting.
• Outstanding analytical, research, and communication abilities, with a track record of supporting or leading M&A transactions.
• Willingness to travel as required for meetings, trade shows, and partner engagements.
