Duties Description The Environmental Educator 2 (EE2) position is responsible for professional outreach of environmental education to all age ranges and stakeholder groups. One of the main responsibilities is to design effective lessons for educators in way that allows those educators to incorporate environmental education into an already complex curricula mandated by the New York State Education Department. Complicating this further is the need to provide lessons of this caliber to all grade levels, to youth organizations, to home school communities, and to non-traditional educators from museums, nature centers and municipal-run programs. Duties include but are not limited to: The EE2 will facilitate professional teacher workshops. Educator will schedule, organize and conduct Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) qualifying workshops for teachers, non-traditional educators, and others in Project WILD, Project WET and Project Learning Tree throughout the year. Programs will be offered to institutions (colleges and universities), municipal and private agencies (parks, museums, nature centers) and offered to public school teachers and hosted at DEC facilities. The EE2 will assist coordinating climate change education for the bureau. The educator will facilitate communication between centers, regions and offices regarding DEC climate change messaging. The educator will develop and maintain a clearinghouse of climate change literature, curriculum and education resources. The EE2 will expand the Region 1 Environmental Education digital presence to increase engagement and awareness by the public.The educator will offer digital and print advertising and promotions for public programs. DEC regional initiatives will also be shared in the same manner. The EE2 will maintain partnerships with agencies, universities and stakeholder groups. The educator will seek out and actively solicit and accommodate new relationships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that promote environmental stewardship, outdoor recreation and environmental education. The EE2 will coordinate with other staff in the regional program to develop Cultural Awareness and Indigenous Peoples educational programming at relevant sites to those communities. The EE2 will supervise lower level staff and train these staff for professional-grade environmental programs. The EE2 will promote large events. Will develop programs for annual events (First Day Hikes, Take Your Child to Work Day, Get Outdoors Day, etc.) Recruit staff from other parts of the DEC to participate. Attend and offer programing at Fairs or Festivals from other groups, such as State Parks, Town Municipalities, and Nature Centers. Organize general public programs for outdoor recreation, including hikes, seining programs at beaches, birdwatching, and nature-based arts and writing. Organize scout events, both after-school and troop meetings. Organize public library programs for youth and adults. Assist other staff teaching school programs throughout the year. Help maintain living and non-living collections for programs.

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
