Description
The Assistant City Attorney I provides a wide range of professional legal services related to municipal government operations to city departments and various boards and commissions; Assists the City Attorney in performing wide range of duties as assigned.
The Assistant City Attorney II acts as principal counsel to provide a wide range of professional legal services related to municipal government operations to city departments and various boards and commissions; Assists the City Attorney in performing wide range of duties as assigned.
Principal Duties
Assistant City Attorney I:
1. Prepare ordinances, resolutions, and legal memoranda as directed, including for City Council meetings.
2. Draft, review, and edit contracts and other legal instruments.
3. Perform legal research and prepare oral and written opinions and trainings on various legal issues as assigned.
4. Assist in providing legal representation to committees, boards and commissions as directed.
5. Provide legal advice and assistance to City officials in the areas of open government and public information.
6. Work toward heightened knowledge of municipal codes and state laws affecting municipalities.
7. Perform other related duties as assigned, to include assisting the City Attorney, Deputy City Attorney and Senior Assistant City Attorney as required.
8. Keep the Senior Assistant City Attorney apprised of all matters.
Assistant City Attorney II:
1. Principal counsel in specialized municipal legal matters pertaining to ordinances, resolutions, claims liability, employment, police civil liability, constitutional law, contracting, planning and zoning laws, real estate, public finance and public utilities.
2. Perform legal research and prepare oral and written opinions and trainings on various legal issues as assigned.
3. Represent the City Attorney at various City Council, boards and commissions, and committee meetings as assigned.
4. Provide legal advice and assistance to City officials in the areas of open government and public information.
5. Perform other related duties as assigned, to include assisting the City Attorney, Deputy City Attorney and Senior Assistant City Attorney as required.
6. Keep the City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney apprised of all matters.
Qualifications
Assistant City Attorney I:
Required: Law Degree from an accredited law school, admission to practice law in the State of Texas
Knowledge of civil and criminal law
Excellent understanding of legal research and writing.
Member in good standing with the Texas State Bar
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred: Prior legal practice experience in municipal law or related field
Assistant City Attorney II:
Required: Law Degree from an accredited law school, admission to practice law in the State of Texas.
Three (3) years of recent municipal or other governmental law experience.
Excellent understanding of legal research and writing.
Knowledge of the principals of municipal law, including ordinances, resolutions, claims liability, employment, police civil liability, contracting, planning and zoning laws, land use, real estate, public finance and/or public utilities.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Member in good standing with the Texas State Bar.
Preferred: Three (3) years progressively responsible experience in a Texas city attorney’s office.
