SCOPE OF WORK: Works together with the larger team to provide safety, support, and treatment to youth in a secure environment. Coordinates and engages youth in daily activities and treatment programming. Promotes positive youth development by teaching, modeling and reinforcing positive behaviors. Engages as part of a team to support trauma informed care and promotes an individualized, treatment-focused collaborative philosophy. The Youth Counselor participates in a process of continuous learning and demonstrates openness to evolving philosophies of practice, including restraint and seclusion prevention. Upholds the vision and mission of the agency through utilizing the Practice Model theories, beliefs and principles in daily practice.
+ Shift: 2pm-10pm Tuesday – Saturday or Friday – Monday 12pm-10pm
+ Hours: 40/wk
+ Pay: $24 /hr

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Maintainsa safe and therapeutic environment by monitoring, supervising and engagingyouth in daily routines and programming to reduce the risk of harm to youth andstaff. Performs searches of youth and their living area for prohibited itemsand ensures protection of youth possessions or evidential material.
• Intervenes in crisissituations, utilizing verbal de-escalation techniques, guidance, structure, andonly as a last resort, an appropriate level of safe physicalmanagement.
• Engageswith youth in the formalized daily activity schedule including recreational,treatment-focused and educational activities to encourage growth andinterpersonal skill development of youth. Follows the established policies andprocedures of the positive behavioral management system.
• Providesfeedback to a youth’s treatment team, including suggestions for treatmentgoals, attending treatment plan meetings, and active participation in weeklycase reviews. Assists youth with practicing coping skills to achieve successfulcompletion of treatment goals.
• Usingthe tenets of evidence-based, trauma-informed behavior management and treatmentprogramming, the Youth Counselor fosters a safe and therapeutic milieu,supports group counseling sessions, and one to one individualized care.
• Communicatesin a professional manner, both verbally and in writing, with program staff,various outside agencies/individuals, such as court officials, medical andclinical personnel, JPPO’s, families, law enforcement personnel, lawyers andyouth.
• Developsand maintains case records, reports, Personal Safety Plans (PSPs) and otherrequired documents which become part of the youth permanent record. Responsiblefor assuring thorough documentation of critical incidents within the program’sdata system.
• Responsiblefor supervising collateral meetings and family visits. Youth Counselorsadditionally screen visitors to the program and utilize program communicationsto document scheduled appointments for visitor meetings. =
• Providestransportation and supervision of youth during off-site appointments andrecreational activities.
• Responsiblefor continued learning and professional development to remain up-to-date withcurrent practices, policies, and the Division of Children, Youth and Familiesinitiatives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: One year experience working inorganized group activities such as camp counseling, Boy or Girl Scouting,school or church programs, coaching sports, working with mentally andphysically challenged youth and adults in a school, daycare, hospital orcorrectional/rehabilitative setting or any similarly related experience. Eachadditional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year ofrequired formal education.
License/Certification: Valid New Hampshiredriver’s license required if responsible for transportingresidents/students.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must successfully completethe Juvenile Justice Academy within twelve months of employment from date ofhire as a Youth Counselor I.
2. Upon completion of theJuvenile Justice Academy, must attend 40 hours of in service training annually.
3. For promotion from YouthCounselor Trainee, in addition to the above, must meet the followingrequirements prior to promotions
4. Must have successfullycompleted the formal mentoring program.
5. Must receive a satisfactory performanceevaluation and be free of any disciplinary action.
6. Must have approval from direct Supervisor,Supervisor of Residential Operations and Residential Director.
7. Case records must all be complete and upto date as determined by the supervisor at the time of the annual performanceevaluation.
