Position Description:
Performs specialized work in the planning, conducting and/or supervising of original research. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and/or supervising research projects and the interpretation of the results for publication. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

Major/Essential Functions:
The primary responsibility of this position is to manage and perform research related to forensic investigations on rigid pavement failures and performance. Specific duties may include the following:
+ Planning, scheduling, conducting and/or supervision of forensic investigations of rigid pavement distresses and failure, including the analysis and interpretations of the information obtained and development of reports and journal papers.
+ Conducting and supervising laboratory testing of various materials used in pavement systems to aid in forensic investigations as well as the evaluation of new materials and techniques
+ Technical project management including project reporting, collaboration with internal and external project team members, and interface with program sponsors
+ Mentoring and collaborating with graduate and undergraduate students
+ Publishing research findings in high quality journals
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills
+ Experience with independently planning and implementing field evaluations of rigid pavement performance.
+ Experience with analytical method development and in the operation and maintenance of laboratory for the evaluations of pavement materials, both asphalt and concrete.
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, off-campus collaborators, and program sponsors.

Preferred Qualifications:
+ Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or related field
+ Experience with field evaluations of the behavior and performance of rigid pavements, including forensic investigations
+ Experience with laboratory evaluations of pavement materials, including asphalt concrete, base and subgrade materials and Portland cement concrete
+ Experience in report and journal paper preparations
+ Substantial knowledge of the behavior of paving materials for both flexible and rigid pavements

Required Qualifications:
Master's degree or specialized academic training beyond the Bachelor's level in a specialized field equivalent to a Master's degree. One year research experience. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof.
This position is designated as involving access to critical infrastructure systems and/or research, as defined by Texas Executive Order GA-48. As such, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check prior to employment. Employees are required to comply with all applicable state and federal regulations related to the protection of critical infrastructure. Ongoing employment is dependent upon maintaining eligibility for access and successfully passing periodic security and compliance reviews.

About the Department and/or College:
The Department if Civil, Environmental, & Construction Engineering (CECE) at Texas Tech University invites applicants for a Research Associate focused on pavement engineering. This position will be funded by grants primarily form the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The candidate is expected to take a leadership role in various aspects of rigid pavement evaluations, including forensic investigations, materials testing, field instrumentation, and report and journal paper preparations.

Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
