Job Overview
The Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Supervisor demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise, leadership, and creative approaches to management of complex CDI program tasks. The candidate will provide supervision for the assigned CDI Specialists at the direction of the CDI Manager which may include oversight for: staffing in the absence of the CDI Manager, assigning the CDI Specialist daily workload, and attending facility assigned meetings in the absence of the CDI Manager. This supervisor maintains a comprehensive knowledge of the EHR and departmental solutions, as well as inpatient and CDI coding practices.
The CDI Supervisor demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving consultative support for reviewing, implementing, and evaluating medical documentation/diagnosis in the electronic health record in accordance with coding guidelines, which has a direct impact on patient outcomes in the assigned area and for the facility.
Job Expectations:
+ Selects, hires, orients and trains qualified employees to perform CDI Specialist job role. Reviews and approves Mytime and monitors absenteeism and tardiness.
+ Monitors CDI Specialist productivity.
+ Completes reviews of medical record for each assigned patient in the timeframe as frequently as required. Completes documentation query forms when missing, unclear or conflicting medical record documentation is found to obtain needed documentation to support the appropriate DRG assignment, Severity of Illness (SOI), Risk of Mortality (ROM), Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) and/or Hospital Acquired Conditions (HACs).
+ Processes discharges by updating the DRG worksheet to reflect any change in status, procedures/treatment, or diagnosis.
+ Serves as a resource and point person for the CDI team. Answers questions related to DRG and ICD-10 code assignments. Problem solves complex cases and intervenes to resolve coder/CDI Specialist disagreements.
+ Ensures CDI team coverage and re-assigns staff to work alternate sites as needed. Monitors productivity of the team as a whole.
+ Maintains and provides oversight to the CDI software tool by ensuring that data entry is completed accurately and thoroughly. Prepares reports as needed. Identifies trends, variances, and opportunities to improve the documentation review process.
+ Collaborates on physician, CDI, and coder education strategies relative to clinical documentation improvement. Shares knowledge and promotes best practices.
+ Trains new staff as directed.
+ Provides supervision and work direction on assigned shift or within department. Hires, coaches, terminates, disciplines and evaluates and manages performance. Escalates sensitive employee issues to the CDI Manager.
+ Assists with the day to management of timekeeping, payroll equipment and other operational expenses.
+ Fosters a culture of improvement, efficiency and innovative thinking.
+ Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
+ Performs other responsibilities as needed/assigned.

+ Leads or participates in work with peers and other departments to create an excellent understanding of workflows and interdependencies, and to identify and implement strategies to improve revenue cycle performance.
+ Works collaboratively with vendors to assure performance expectations are being met as necessary.
+ Represent Revenue Cycle and Fairview Health Services at industry forums to network and identify process improvement opportunities.
+ Serves as a resource on revenue cycle issues and regulatory expectations.
+ Creates strong collaborative partnerships and influence others across teams, groups and business boundaries to achieve real world problem solving

Minimum Qualifications to Fulfill Job Responsibilities:
Required
Education
+ Associates degree (or higher) in Nursing or Health Information Management (HIM) degree or related field or equivalent experience.
Experience
+ 2 years Acute/Inpatient experience as an RN or 5 years of inpatient coding experience
+ Minimum 3 years CDI experience
License/Certification/Registration
+ Current Registered Nurse of MN (RN) licensure or current Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Tech (RHIT) credentials or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Documentation Integrity Practitioner (CDIP) or Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS).
+ Qualification Source: MN Board of Nursing or American Health Information Management Association or Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists.
Preferred
Education
+ Bachelor’s degree in Nursing for candidates with nursing experience or Health Information Management (HIM) degree or related field or equivalent experience.
Experience
+ Minimum 5 years CDI experience (including, but not limited to CDI Specialist, CDI Lead, Second Level Reviewer, CDI Liaison or CDI Physician Educator)
License/Certification/Registration
+ Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) for candidates with HIM experience.
+ Qualification Source: Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist.
Additional Requirements** **:
+ Knowledge of clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory and reimbursement rules and regulations.
+ Knowledge of current coding and DRG classification systems.
+ Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and pathophysiology, pharmacology, ancillary test results.
+ Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and DRG classification systems.
+ Knowledge of physician and nursing unit practices.
+ Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking and conflict management skills.
+ Computer and data analysis skills.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

+ Written Communication: Ability to organize and express information and ideas in written form to individuals as well as groups. Constructs messages that are clear and convincing.

The posted pay range is for a 40-hour workweek (1.0 FTE).
