    FUNCTION & SCOPE:

    The Information Security Intern supports the Information Security team in protecting the Research Foundation's computer systems, networks, and data by assisting with monitoring potential security threats, reviewing alerts, and helping with basic investigation and mitigation tasks under the guidance of senior staff. The intern contributes to maintaining security controls, supports security event response activities, and collaborates with ITS Operations and Enterprise Applications Services to help ensure system resources remain patched and up to date. While developing technical expertise, the intern is expected to demonstrate a foundational understanding of IT systems and networks, strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn the evolving threat landscape through exposure to cyber defense tools, and the ability to work diligently in a fast-paced environment.

    DUTIES:

    + Assist in monitoring security alerts and reviewing logs for potential threats

    + Support vulnerability management efforts, including scanning systems and tracking remediation

    + Help maintain security documentation, policies, and procedures

    + Participate in security audits, risk assessments, and compliance activities

    + Contribute to incident response tasks such as triage, evidence collection, and reporting

    + Research emerging threats, security trends, and tools to support team initiatives

    + Collaborate with IT, development, and security staff on secure-by-design best practices

    + Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications & Skills:

    + Basic understanding of networking concepts, operating systems, and security fundamentals

    + Familiarity with tools such as SIEM platforms, vulnerability scanners, or endpoint protection

    + Ability to evaluate data, identify patterns, and resolve complex issues

    + Eagerness to learn and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment

    + Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision

    + Ability to interact professionally with all levels of employees throughout the organization

    + Adept in learning new software tools

    + Outstanding communication and organizational skills

    + Possess critical thinking skills in approaching problems

    + Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 Products

    Job Requirements:

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    + Candidate should be pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

    + Has demonstrated organization skills, willingness to work independently, problem solve, adhere to deadlines, effective listening/communication, and proven commitment to follow established processes/procedures

    + Understanding of cloud security concepts (AWS, Azure, GCP)

    + Coursework or certifications in security (e.g., Security+, CyberOps, etc.).

     

    Compensation for this position: The compensation for this role is $20 per hour for undergraduates and $22 per hour for graduate students.
