    Job Details:

    Summary of Job Purpose To organize and administer safe, individualized perioperative nursing care through assessment, observation and nursing intervention. Essential Job Responsibilities Review the duties in relationship to quality, quantity and productivity. Give examples and provide feedback as deemed appropriate. The employee may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.

     

    + Patient education – orients patients to operative events and procedures. Teaches to the needs and abilities of the patients to alleviate fears and decrease anxiety.

    + Patient Care – Collaborates with appropriate health care team members, patient and family/significant others to ensure continuity of care throughout their perioperative event. Creates a safe environment and serves as patient advocate; evaluates, revises and documents the plan of care.

    + Patient Assessment – Performs a thorough and ongoing nursing assessment of patient and data specific to the operative event. Recognizes the importance of informed consent. Develops an individualized surgical plan of care considering physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs of each patient.

    + Treatment/Procedures – Implements the principles of medical and surgical asepsis. Performs all treatment and procedures in accordance with established policies and procedures and patient care standards. Demonstrates knowledge of the proper use and care of O.R. equipment and supplies.

    + Communication – Demonstrates the ability to process and interface appropriate information between the health care team and the patient, family/significant other to ensure quality patient outcomes. Presents a professional attitude and provides an atmosphere conducive to a secure, serene environment. Demonstrates knowledge in accessing necessary resources to achieve positive outcome.

    + Documentation – Accurately documents pertinent patient information, utilizing the nursing process, on all required forms, to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

    + Cost Containment – Demonstrates an awareness of the need for cost containment and the economical use of patient supplies.

    + CQI – Assists in obtaining data for QI program with follow through in CQI projects.

    + Supervision – Is responsible for supporting and directing the surgical team, able to recognize and intervene in stressful/emergency situations and provide coordination of activities, Interacts skillfully and appropriately with Surgical Technicians and ancillary staff.

    + O. R. Call – Contributes to the twenty-four (24) hour coverage of the Operating Room for emergency surgery.

    + Performs any other duties as assigned.

     

    Essential Job Qualifications

    Education:

    + Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

    Experience:

    + 2 yrs. of acute care experience preferred; recent surgical experience desired

    Training/License:

    + Basic knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Demonstrates strong clinical skills/Valid NYS RN License

    Other:

    + BLS Certification. AORN Certification desirable.

    + Flexibility to be assigned to Health Alliance facilities as needed.
