    Overview

     

    The New York Public Library consists of four major research libraries and 88 branch libraries located in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

     

    NYPL is seeking a Security Supervisor to maintain an environment that is safe and comfortable for our Library users and employees. The Security Supervisor is responsible for overall security at NYPL buildings. They will respond to emergencies, perform general security duties, document unusual incidents, and serve in relief of the Security Director or Assistant. They must work as a member of the Security team, act professionally, and demonstrate courtesy and respect to all.

    + All stakeholders and leaderships needs and security protocols at the campus

    **Improve** :

    + Security guard response and performance, as well as special collection security

    Some expectations for this role are that within:

    1 month, this person will:

    + Complete onboarding, site orientation, and review of NYPL policies & emergency procedures.

    + Become familiar with all areas of the facility, key contacts, and posts.

    3 months, this person will:

    + Develop a leadership style and learn and implement the best special collection security practices.

    + Supervise daily operations with minimal oversight.

    6 months and beyond, this person will:

    + Take full leadership over assigned shifts, incidents, and team accountability

    + Identify and recommend improvements in training, coverage, or protocols.

    Responsibilities

    + Direct and manage security operations of SASB and SNFL

    + Maintain the operating budget of contract guard services

    + Monitor contract guard performance and proprietary guards

    + Oversee the performance of contractual services at SASB and SNFL

    + Oversee all internal and external investigations

    + Manage the supervision of all research buildings in the absence of the Assistant Director or designee

    + Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at locations of responsibility

    + Supervise all union and contract supervisors assigned to locations

     

    Required Education, Experience & Skills

    Required Education & Certifications

    + Associate’s degree or 2+ years of additional related experience

    + Must have a valid New York State Driver’s License

    + Must have a valid New York State Security Guard License

    Required Experience

    + 5+ years of security or law enforcement experience

    + Prior supervisory experience

    Required Skills

    + Substantial knowledge of New York State penal code and local laws

    + Knowledge of the Security Guard Act 1994

    + Successfully demonstrate knowledge of the operations of electronic security systems, including CCTV, computerized card access, and fire protection systems

    + Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise, and factual reports

    + Ability to manage security during small and large-scale events

    + Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel

    Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities

    + **_Team Leadership:_** Directly supervise a team of Security Guards, providing clear guidance, accountability, and support during assigned shifts. Promote professionalism, courtesy, and vigilance at all times.

    + **_Performance Oversight:_** Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, post compliance, and incident response. Provide informal feedback regularly and escalate performance issues or disciplinary concerns to senior leadership when necessary.

    + **_Training and Development:_** Assist in the onboarding of new guards. Identify training needs and coach staff in real-time to ensure continuous professional development and adherence to NYPL policies.

    + **_Scheduling and Coverage:_** Collaborate with the Security Management Team to ensure posts are covered
