The Department of Art History at New York University seeks an accomplished scholar at the rank of Full Professor to serve as Department Chair during a moment of significant opportunity and growth. We invite applicants of intellectual distinction working in or across any period or area of visual arts, material cultures, and/or the built environment. This colleague will have a record of successful departmental or institutional leadership, preferably at the level of chair or dean. They will work collaboratively with the Department’s faculty to shape its future—amplifying its international profile, stewarding its expansion, and fostering a supportive, dynamic environment for professional advancement. In addition to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, the Chair will play a key role in faculty hiring and program development. They will also help expand the department’s partnerships across NYU’s rich academic networks, strengthening ties with NYU’s schools, institutes, and global campuses and with the world-class museums and cultural institutions of New York City.
The appointment will begin on September 1, 2026, or as soon thereafter as possible, subject to budgetary and administrative approval.
Candidates must have a PhD and a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and institutional leadership.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $129,000 - $189,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. As Department Chair, this position is also eligible for an additional annual stipend while serving in the role.
