    The Department of Population Health Sciences seeks a vibrant and visionary scientist to lead the**Division of Health System Innovation and Research**( HSIR ) within the Department of Population Health Sciences. The Department’s key missions include research, education, community engagement, health disparities, and collaboration with clinical partners. Candidates for the HSIR Division Chief should have a: (1) proven track record of leadership, (2) history of innovative and successful investigation, (3) strong appreciation of a multifaceted range of health service research areas, and (4) commitment to program development, team science, mentoring across career stages, and education.

     

    HSIR currently has 15 tenured/tenure track faculty and 7 research track faculty. The Division faculty mentor numerous junior faculty across campus as well as postdoctoral scholars, medical residents and fellows, and PhD and medical students.

    This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished health services researcher to lead a high-caliber program of engaged multi-disciplinary investigators. The**Department of Population Health Sciences**had $32M in Research Expenditures in the last fiscal year and serves as the hub for education, investigation and methodological expertise in population health.     QUALIFICATIONS

    Applicants for Division Chief are expected to hold a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD (or equivalent), to have a proven track record of leadership experience, a history of successful mentoring and/or teaching, and evidence of an innovative and successful research career with peer-reviewed extramural funding. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines and departments and will have considerable strengths in interpersonal communication.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Division Chief is responsible for defining the vision of the division in collaboration with the Department Chair. The three Division Chiefs within the Department of Population Health Sciences work closely with the Department Chair to develop the overall vision and policies for this department. The Division Chief will also take a strong mentoring role with faculty. Finally, the Division Chief will work with faculty and the directors of graduate studies and postdoctoral fellowships to ensure successful training experience for post-docs and graduate students.

    Strategic Planning and Division Growth:

    To succeed, HSIR must maintain its current trajectory in independent and collaborative research. Additionally, it is vital that the division continue as a cross-institutional resource that helps advance the University’s clinical delivery system and outcomes assessment, while building robust, interdisciplinary collaboration for research and education. To this end, the Division Chief will engage with relevant academic department chairs, the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and University of Utah Medical Group leadership to develop and validate enhanced and innovative approaches to health care delivery and outcomes assessment, with the expectation that the vision and expertise of the Division Chief will inform program goals.

    LEADERSHIP CAPACITY

    The Division Chief should:

    + Be an accomplished mid-career to senior health services researcher who excels at interacting with clinicians, methodologists, and administrators

    + Have a history of successful engagement in operational partnerships

    + Have a record of forward-thinking leadership needed to help the Division, Department, and University of Utah Health Care prepare for and lead delivery system reform

    + Have a national/international reputation in health services research

    + Be able to serve as an advocate for the Division as a resource for the missions of the Health Sciences

    + Have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple investigators with diverse research expertise and projects and to facilitate others’ success

    + Have a demonstrated ability to build successful interdisciplinary research teams, mentor early-career investigators, and obtain the committed support of stakeholders who are not paid or directly supervised by the incumbent

    + Take an active role in partnering with the Director of Graduate Studies and Director of Postdoctoral Fellows to support the educational mission of the Department as well as pre- and post-doctoral trainees in the Division.
