Job Summary:
West Texas A&M University, a member of The Texas A&M University System located in Canyon, Texas, invites applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor position in Environmental Science. This full-time (9-month) position includes research and instructional responsibilities. Teaching duties will include existing and new courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels within the successful candidate's area of expertise, supporting the Environmental Science program, and related to the needs of the large environmental science workforce in air, soils, and water. The successful candidate will develop classes and conduct research in environmental science or closely related field (examples may include water management and sustainability, environmental health and safety and compliance, hazardous waste assessment, wildland soils and soil pollution, human and ecological risk assessment, environmental and wildlife toxicology, contaminant transport, exposure and remediation, and remote sensing of the environment). Further, the successful candidate will establish a competitive, externally funded research program; publish in peer-reviewed journals; attend professional meetings; provide academic advisement to undergraduate and graduate students; and engage undergraduate and graduate students in research.
Work Performed:
+ Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental science or closely related areas; for example, including but not necessarily limited to, courses in atmospheric and climate science, environmental health and safety and compliance, hazardous waste assessment, wildland soils and soil pollution, human and ecological risk assessment, environmental and wildlife toxicology, contaminant transport, exposure and remediation.
+ Develop an externally funded, dynamic research program capable of supporting undergraduate and graduate student research experiences.
+ Recruit, advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
+ Actively participate in departmental, university, and professional service activities.
+ Work collaboratively with WTAMU administration and faculty, other universities and agencies, to support teaching, research, and service needs.
Necessary Qualifications:
+ An earned PhD in Environmental Science or closely related field (e.g., geoscience, soil science, hydrology, atmospheric and climate science, or environmental chemistry).
+ Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service.
+ Competency in scientific research and commitment to obtaining extramural funding to support a competitive research program in environmental science.
+ Leadership skills, effective communication, self-motivation, and performance in a student-centered environment are expected.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Experience and successful record in instruction, and mentoring student research.
+ Academic or industry experience beyond the Ph.D. is preferred.
+ Working knowledge or experience in environmental consulting and state or federal agencies regulatory and compliance techniques.
+ Experience with applied environmental research projects that provide undergraduate and graduate students with knowledge and experience, relevant across a spectrum of state, federal and private sector research, development, as well as environmental compliance and remediation careers.
+ Successful history of seeking/obtaining extramural funding (list awards and amounts in the CV).
+ Demonstrated, proven record in leadership, mentoring, and interdisciplinary research. Preferably experience in leading interdisciplinary teams of scientists across multiple organizations such as academic departments, research centers and/or state agencies and organizations.
