Payroll Manager

Our client is a growing, dynamic organization in the Carson area seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead and oversee in-house payroll operations for a large, complex workforce. This is a hands-on leadership role for a detail-oriented payroll professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and brings deep expertise in payroll compliance, union payroll, and multi-state operations.

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership capabilities, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to partner cross-functionally while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

+ Oversee and manage in-house payroll processing for 800+ employees, including union and non-union staff

+ Supervise weekly and bi-weekly payroll cycles, ensuring accuracy of wages, benefits, garnishments, and tax deductions

+ Ensure compliance with multi-state payroll tax laws, wage and hour regulations, and union labor agreements

+ Reconcile payroll tax submissions and manage quarterly and annual filings, including W-2s

+ Prepare payroll documentation and reports for audits, workers’ compensation reviews, and union contract requirements

+ Serve as the primary escalation point for payroll inquiries and discrepancy resolution

+ Partner with HR, Finance, and Operations to support payroll-related initiatives

+ Identify and implement process improvements to streamline payroll operations and increase efficiency

+ Maintain and update payroll systems in alignment with current regulations and company policies

+ Train, mentor, and develop payroll staff to support operational excellence and team growth

Qualifications:

+ 5+ years of in-house payroll experience, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities

+ Proven experience managing payroll for large employee populations (1,000+ employees)

+ Strong knowledge of union payroll, multi-state payroll compliance, and wage & hour laws

+ Experience with payroll tax filings, audits, and regulatory reporting

+ High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality

+ Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

+ Payroll certification (CPP or FPC) preferred

Requirements • Minimum of 5 years of experience in full-cycle payroll management, including multi-state payroll.

• Proficiency in using ADP Workforce Now for payroll processing and reporting.

• Demonstrated ability to manage payroll for over 500 employees, including unionized staff.

• Comprehensive knowledge of payroll laws and regulations, including tax compliance and labor agreements.

• Strong organizational and analytical skills to handle complex payroll tasks and reporting.

• Ability to oversee bi-weekly and weekly payroll cycles with high accuracy.

• Excellent communication skills to coordinate with internal teams and external auditors.

• Proven experience in preparing documentation for audits and handling union-specific payroll requirements.
