    Job Title: Mechanical EngineerJob Description

     

    This position offers design engineering support to a fuel production facility, spanning from research and development to system design, installation, testing, and maintenance. The role is integral in the design, assembly, testing, and maintenance of mechanical and process equipment, aiding in the design and licensing of the facility.

    Responsibilities

    + Create designs for various process support systems including chemical, piping, HVAC, ventilation, structural, electro-mechanical, automation, and robotics.

    + Perform load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, and layout of ductwork and piping.

    + Support process, facility design, and fuel development teams.

    + Create and document engineering designs such as requirements, specifications, mechanical drawings, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and engineering calculations.

    + Conduct energy modeling, simulations, and engineering calculations to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

    + Ensure all designs meet regulatory and safety standards.

    + Coordinate with design teams to ensure seamless integration of HVAC and other mechanical systems.

    + Work with contractors to clarify design intent, resolve technical issues, and provide solutions to site challenges.

    + Select and order parts for process systems such as motors, drives, sensors, pumps, and valves.

    + Assemble parts to build prototype designs.

    + Operate process equipment to perform design verification and validation.

    + Conduct quality assurance checks and site inspections to verify work compliance.

    + Perform design engineering activities to support fuel manufacturing including reliability, maintenance, process improvement, failure analysis, and cost estimation.

    + Develop standard operating procedures and maintenance plans for process equipment and support systems.

    + Participate in teams to develop standardized engineering workflows and documentation.

    + Maintain professional demeanor and behavior in all forms of communication.

    + Lead the execution of core tasks and responsibilities with some latitude for independent judgment.

    + Provide feedback and guidance to junior team members.

    + Lead small groups of engineers to solve complex technical problems and deliver high-quality engineering work products on time and within budget.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    Essential Skills

    + Ability to review and validate P&ID drawings.

    + Knowledge of relevant codes and standards.

    + Ability to make minor design changes and calculations.

    + Experience in highly regulated industries such as nuclear, government, pharmaceutical, and chemical.

    + Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, or nuclear engineering from an ABET EAC accredited program.

    + CAD and P&ID experience.

    + Experience with facility design, construction, and operation.

    + Typically, ten years of experience in an engineering role including machine, process, or facility design and assembly.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    + Master’s degree in engineering or related field may be in lieu of two years of experience.

    + Ph.D. in engineering or related field may be in lieu of three years of experience.

    + Knowledge of mechanical and/or chemical engineering concepts including design, manufacture, installation, assembly, and operation of equipment and systems.

    + Knowledge of manufacturing facility design including lean manufacturing approaches.

    + Extensive knowledge of applicable codes and standards pertinent to mechanical and/or process designs.

    + Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Carrier HAP, Trace TRACE, or similar design and simulation software.

     

    Work Environment

     

    This role requires work in an on-site office environment.

     

    Job Type & Location

     

    This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oak Ridge, TN.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $48.00 - $75.00/hr.
