THE POSITION
Do you have experience maintaining the modern mechanical systems on an auxiliary sail vessel? Are you looking to expand your mechanical knowledge and use your skills to support the operation of a traditionally rigged tall ship? If so, we have a position for you! The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission is looking for an enthusiastic, energetic and hard-working individual to serve as the Engineer aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara, Pennsylvania's Flagship. In this position, you will be engaged in the operation and maintenance of the ship's modern mechanical equipment and systems, including the propulsion, electrical generation and domestic systems.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Sailing from her homeport at the Erie Maritime Museum in Erie, PA, the U.S. BrigNiagarais a fully functional, traditionally rigged brig engaged in sail training and historical interpretation. Through the up rig, maintenance, operation, and down rig of the ship, theNiagaraprogram preserves, interprets and passes on the traditions of what life was like for sailors living, working, and fighting aboard a square-rigged sailing ship in the early 19th century.
As an Engineer, you will serve as the crew leader for all work involved in the operation, maintenance and repair ofNiagara'smodern equipment and systems. You will ensure that the mechanical and domestic systems are maintained in fine working order, implementing preventative maintenance plans, identifying challenges to safe and efficient operation, making repairs, and maintaining guidelines, standard operating procedures and log books. You will be responsible for keeping mechanical areas neat and organized, ensuring that tools are in good working order and the inventory of necessary supplies is up-to-date. You will create and manage work lists, assigning and supervising various tasks while training less experienced crew, volunteers, and trainees in those tasks and in seamanship in general.
Additionally, you will assist in the interpretation of the ship, offering museum guests a glimpse into life aboard a 19th century sailing vessel. You will assist in keeping the ship, shop and berthing area clean, tidy and presentable to museum guests and the general public.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
+ Full-time, year round employment
+ Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday - Sunday, with 60-minute lunch.
+ This position's schedule will vary per the needs of the ship and programming.
+ Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
+ Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
+ Six months continuous service aboard a 250 ton auxiliary sail vessel maintaining the modern mechanical systems;or
+ Any equivalent experience and training.
Additional Requirements:
+ This position requires possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
+ You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
+ Three or more years of experience sailing in a supervisory capacity.
+ Two or more years of experience working in the engineering department of a ship of similar size and engaged in similar operation asNiagara.
+ One or more years of experience sailing aboard a square-rigged vessel.
+ Possession of a USCG Able-Bodied Seaman Credential.
Legal Requirements:
+ This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
+ Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
+ This position is subject to initial, ongoing random, and reasonable cause drug screenings. Employment in this position is conditioned on successfully passing an initial drug screening upon appointment to the position. Ongoing employment will require compliance with ongoing random and reasonable cause drug screenings in alignment with US Coast Guard Regulation: CFR Title 46, Chapter 1, Subchapter B, Part 16. and Commonwealth procedures.
