    A Brief Overview

     

    The primary responsibility of the Trauma Registrar is Trauma Registry data abstraction, ICD-9 Coding, AIS coding, E-Coding, Procedure coding, data entry into the Trauma Registry, and concurrent participation in the Trauma Performance Improvement process at Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Lucille Packard children's Hospital, and Santa Clara County EMS, , in accordnace with the American College of Surgeons, Santa Clara County, and California TItle XXII Trauma Center regulations. The main role is to provide timely and accurate abstraction, coding, injury scoring, and identififcation of performance improvement issues, through review of the medical record, from time of injury through hospital discharge of trauma patients. The Trauma Registrar actively participates in local, regional and statewide trauma meetings and educational offerings. The Trauma Registrar is a liaison to other members of the healthcare team who provide care to trauma patients. The trauma Registrar supports trauma performance improvement and research at Stanford Hosptial and Clinics and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. The Trauma Registrar must adhere to HIPAA requirements, confidentiality and security.

    What you will do

    + Demonstrates competency in data abstraction, entry into the trauma database, and coding of injuries and procedures in the trauma database, using ICD-9 coding, Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) - Abbreviated Injury Scoring to calculate Injury Severity Scores and probability of survival; and e-Coding to track & report mechanisms of injury. Meets expected monthly quality and productivity standards according to departmental, Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Santa Clara County EMS Agency & the American College of Surgeons' requirements.

    + Understands the importance of data reporting and interacts appropriately with physicians and other departments to obtain the documentation necessary for accurate code assignment.

    + Validates data by participating in departmental inter-rater-reliability activities on a monthly basis, running monthly departmental validation reports, and monthly National Trauma Databank validation reports;

    + Participates in the monthly correction of errors identified during the validation process, thus ensuring the validity of data dispensed for trauma research, performance improvement & system issues.

    + Writes reports using the trauma registry to support trauma research, performance improvement, best-practice, and injury prevention.

    + Attends departmental, local, regional, and state trauma meetings and committees as required by Santa Clara County and the American College of Surgeons. Shares information with the rest of the team.

    + Maintains competency as a trauma registrar by completing four (4) hours per year of trauma registry related continuing education, as required by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

    + Demonstrates a high degree of independence in performance of responsibilities, working effectively without direct supervision. Exhibits strong time management, problem solving and communication skills. Is able to effectively utilize various computer systems in performance of job functions.

    + Maintains an understanding of regulations, standards and practices as they relate to Trauma Center verification/designation requirements, and HIPAA. Is knowledgeable of the various regulatory and data reporting agencies and their functions.

    + Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the American College of Surgeons Trauma Center requirements and California Title XXII Trauma System regulations.

    Education Qualifications

    + High School Diploma or GED

    Experience Qualifications

    + Less than two (2) years professional work experience in nursing, medical records, hospital coding, health-science related field, health relate research, and/or health related program development, implementation and evaluation

    Licenses and Certifications

    + Complete American Trauma Society Registrar Course within 1 year of hire .

    + Complete most recent AAAM’s Abbreviated Injury Scale Course within 1 year of hire .

    + Most Current ICD-10 Course Completion within 1 year of hire .

    Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $42.13 - $47.44 per hour

     

    The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
