    Job Overview:

    The Racing Official, Assistant Clerk of Scales performs tasks and oversees processes/project components for the Racing Operations team under limited supervision, ensuring work is aligned to organizational standards, solving problems and roadblocks as they occur. The Racing Official, Assistant Clerk of Scales assist the Clerk of Scales in weighing jockeys prior to and after each race, ensuring riders carry the correct weight during the running of a race. Responsible for the organization and execution of racing events by reporting rider changes and weight discrepancies to stewards, as well as coordinating jockey room operations with Clerk of Scales and overseeing silks room and working alongside valets.

    Essential Functions:

    Jock’s Room:

    • Assigns tasks for the support function of the Racing Operations team, and advises team on the execution of tasks to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and quality of deliverables.

    • Oversees elements of race-day operations such as ensuring jockeys arrive and weigh in designated time prior to the first race, including overseeing silks room and working alongside valets.

    • Responsible for correct silks and number bands being worn by by jockeys prior to leaving room.

    • Identifies and escalates issues that may impact race integrity, safety, or regulatory compliance. Identifies and promptly reports potential issues or discrepancies to the Clerk of Scales or Stewards, as appropriate.

    • Communicates riders changes, overweights, claims, and issues with stewards and racing office.

    • Effectively diffuses challenging situations to maintain a professional, orderly, and efficient environment within the jockey room.

    • Leads the coordination of timing of jocky arrival to paddock to ensure races gets done on time, and recommends process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.

    Qualifications:

    Educational Level Required: Minimum high school diploma or GED.

     

    Minimum Years and Kind of Work Experience Required: 5-to-7 years of experience in various roles in racing.

     

    Other Requirements: Requires thorough knowledge of racing. High level of credibility and

    professionalism, and flexibility

    Knowledge Required: Knowledge of thoroughbred racing, ability to learn and operate scale and related software, awareness of the rules of racing as it relates to jockeys and scale of weights, ability to assist other racing related duties, including racing office if needed is preferred.Preferred Skills: Communication, Industry Knowledge of Thoroughbred Racing, Organizational Skills, Regulatory Requirements of Racing as it Relates to Jockeys and Scale of Weights, Customer Service, Time Management, Horsemanship Skills, Strong Decision-Making & Situational Problem-Solving, High-Level Credibility and Professionalism, Ability to Assist Other Racing Related Duties, including Racing Office if Needed is Preferred

    Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

    Physical:

    Assistant Clerk of Scales: At Aqueduct and Belmont, walking up and down stairs from Jock’s

    Room to Paddock area and Winner’s Circle where digital scales are located. At Saratoga, walking from Jock’s Room to Winner’s Circle where digital scales are located. Moving from one track to another as racing calendar permits.

    Environmental:

    Assistant Clerk of Scales: Indoors and outdoors, primarily indoors except during the running of the race, where the official would be stationed at outdoor scale. The indoor portion would be adjacent to a locker room environment.

    Psychological:

    Working in a fast-paced setting where accuracy and integrity are paramount. Dealing with a

     

    variety of people and personalities in a highly competitive environment. Maintaining a sense of order in a locker room setting.

     

    Pay Range / Salary: $32.69 - $44.14
