Description
OPAL Experimental Platform Development Lead
The OPAL Experimental Platform Development Lead will play a pivotal role in shaping experiments on state-of-the-art laser systems at the University of Rochester, including the existing MTW-OPAL laser and the NSF OPAL user facility currently in its planning stage. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams comprised of experimental and laser scientists, engineers, and operations staff to plan and execute experiments on MTW-OPAL, a midscale laser system. The successful candidate will also contribute directly to the design of a user-focused, next-generation NSF OPAL facility that will enable groundbreaking discoveries in a range of scientific disciplines. The hands-on MTW-OPAL role will inform the NSF OPAL design role that could ultimately lead to a leadership position in a future construction project. Both roles will require strong leadership to provide a vital link between the science and engineering team members needed to understand and translate complex experimental needs into practical, robust experimental platform designs integrating laser, experimental diagnostic, and target systems.
The OPAL Experimental Platform Development Lead position will exist in the Laser System Projects group of the Laser and Materials Technology Division at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. It will report to the team leader for NSF OPAL Experimental Systems and work closely with the MTW-OPAL laser facility manager.
Key responsibilities include:
+ Gathering, analyzing, and translating complex scientific requirements to guide engineering design efforts
+ Collaborating across diverse technical teams to ensure alignment of scientific goals with engineering design
+ Contributing to operation and management in a hands-on laboratory environment, working directly with a mid-scale laser system
+ Documenting and communicating complex ideas to a wide audience
Qualifications
+ Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to engage with a broad spectrum of physics disciplines relevant to ultraintense lasers, as well as a strong passion for innovation and problem-solving at the forefront of science and technology.
+ A Ph.D. is required (a physics-oriented field is strongly preferred).
+ Candidates with equivalent experience and education will be considered.
Application Instructions
+ a cover letter;
+ a curriculum vitae and a list of publications;
+ at least two letters of recommendation
