    Description

    General Purpose:

    Develops and leads engaging art making curriculum for young learners (ages 2-17) in Creative Workshop youth programs (camps, classes or workshops). Responsible for developing age-appropriate, hands-on projects that support or reflect the program curriculum and age/grade level. Responsible for project planning, demonstration, instruction, and the management and requesting of all art making supplies. Sets the tone, pace, and project scope of the program, managing and balancing the art making portions with classroom management and student engagement to ensure success of the program. Instructors use the resources of the Memorial Art Gallery (most notably access to permanent and travelling exhibitions) to engage, inspire and keep students learning.

    Responsibilities:

    • Prepares and plans lessons to teach at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop.

    • Designs course materials to fit the pace, goals, and skill level of the class, camp or workshop

    • Sets a schedule of instruction with goals consistent to the class as planned to fit into curriculum.

    • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of subject and medium.

    • Prepares in advance any materials students will need (i.e. material lists, handouts, audiovisual presentations).

    • Makes timely requests to Creative Workshop Manager for supply needs, gallery visits, copies and audio-visual needs.

    • Helps students to identify their goal for the course.

    • Supports students in meeting those goals by achieving increasing levels of demonstrated skill and individual creativity among students.

    • Exposes students to the technical processes and language they may need to progress in any further study.

    • Provides students with assistance, guidance, and encouragement.

    • Provides constructive critique to students’ work/evaluates student performance as requested.

    • Guides and directs the work of the Teaching Assistant that help support the management of classroom behaviors, supplies and achieve outlined program goals.

    • Manages provided supplies and equipment with proper care.

    • Maintains a clean, organized and safe working environment within the classroom. Cleans up after each program in accordance with CW best practices and expectations. Encourages students to properly clean-up their supplies, equipment and workstations

    • Maintains accurate records of projects and curriculum connections; submits attendance and other pertinent data.

    • Adheres to all University of Rochester and Memorial Art Gallery policies.

    • Completes required trainings (either digitally or in person) on an annual basis.

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in studio art or a related discipline. Minimum 2 years related experience teaching art to young learners or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Instructors must complete a background check and appropriate trainings for working with minors.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (preferred):

    • Strong interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, chaperones, administrators and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

    • Previous classroom/studio teaching experience.

    • Must have a thorough understanding of effective and creative teaching methods appropriate for the age group.

    • High technical mastery of the media they teach, successful record of their own professional development (showing, teaching), patience and professionalism.
