Position Summary...

We are seeking a Staff Data Scientist for our Sam’s Fraud Engine (SaFE) team. This role involves creating innovative solutions for fraud prevention across our We are looking for a highly skilled Staff Engineer who can lead complex technical initiatives across AI/ML, microservices, and large-scale data processing systems. In this role, you will partner closely with business and product leadership, and cross-functional engineering teams to architect scalable solutions, drive strategic technical direction, and elevate engineering excellence across the organization.

This is both a hands-on and thought-leadership role—ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, influences at multiple levels, and can deliver high-impact systems at scale.

About the Team

The Fraud Prevention Services team at Sam's owns the responsibility to prevent fraud across all of Sam's club's digital channels. We use a mix of machine learning, knowledge graph and herustic rules approach to achieving our goals. We are part of the larger Trust and Safety organization and are constantly innovating prevent fraud effectively while also delighting our members with seamless shopping experiences.

What you'll do...

Technical Leadership & Architecture

+ Serve as a technical leader across AI/ML, distributed systems, and data engineering initiatives.

+ Work with business owners, product managers, and engineering teams to understand complex business problems and translate them into scalable technical solutions.

+ Architect and guide the implementation of low-latency, highly available microservices and large-scale data-processing pipelines.

+ Define technical direction and influence long-term engineering strategy, platform evolution, and product roadmaps.

+ Support our Data Science partners in conducting exploratory data analysis, prototyping and operationalizing heuristic rules, ML models, network-graphs and other data-driven solutions.

+ Ensure robust MLOps practices—including automation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and model lifecycle management.

+ Lead design reviews, code reviews, and provide technical mentorship to senior and junior engineers.

+ Set quality standards for testing—including functional, performance, resiliency, and reliability testing.

+ Drive best practices in performance engineering, monitoring, alerting, and system observability.

What You'll Bring

+ 3-5 years of engineering experience, including significant hands-on contributions to large-scale systems and machine learning solutions.

+ Strong expertise in ML algorithms such as classification models, decision trees, XGBoost, deep learning, anomaly detection, and feature engineering.

+ Experience operationalizing ML and data-driven systems in production environments.

+ Deep experience with distributed systems and microservices (low-latency, highly available architectures).

+ Expertise with big-data and streaming platforms such as Cassandra, Hive, PySpark, BigQuery, Kafka, or Databricks.

+ Strong proficiency with tools, libraries, and frameworks used for large-scale data processing, analysis, and visualization.

+ Outstanding communication skills—able to influence senior stakeholders and explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

+ Experience in MLOps, performance engineering, testing, tuning, monitoring, and observability.

Preferred

+ Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.

+ Prior experience in fraud detection, risk systems, anomaly detection, or similar domains.

+ Experience driving org-wide technical strategy or leading multi-team initiatives.

Sunnyvale, California US-11807: The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
