    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

    The College of Staten Island-CUNY invites applications for a teacher-scholar in its Writing Studies (English Department). The faculty member will play a key role in the First-Year Writing Program. This position is a full-time, doctoral lecturer line with the opportunity for the candidate to earn a Continuous Employment Certificate (CCE).

     

    The new faculty member will perform teaching, research, and guidance in area(s) of expertise and will serve on a committee that develops first-year writing curricula and policies. The teaching load upon entering the position will be an annual workload of 24 units, typically a 3-3 teaching load. The candidate will have the opportunity to rotate into one of our administrative roles in the Writing Program (described below). The candidate will teach courses in our first-year writing program as well as Writing Studies courses in our undergraduate major and at the MA graduate level.

     

    The CSI Writing Program boasts a dedicated group of full-time tenure-line faculty and lecturers who in addition to teaching serve in advisory roles to the program, as well as in administrative roles such as WPA, Deputy WPA, scheduler, Writing Center Director, and ESL coordinator. We take seriously the development of our adjunct community through professional development in the teaching of writing and mentorship. Our Writing Program values innovative and student-centered approaches to teaching writing, and we aim toward a culture of collaboration and experimentation.

    CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

    The College of Staten Island (CSI) is a City University of New York (CUNY) senior College organized around two academic divisions and three schools, with over 14,000 students. CSI offers a broad range of academic programs in the liberal arts and sciences, and in several professional areas. The College awards associate's, bachelor's, master's and clinical doctoral degrees, and in collaboration with The CUNY Graduate Center, numerous PhD degrees. CSI’s internationally recognized faculty passionately engage in scholarly and artistic activities, and together with a strong professional staff, lead students through transformational learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. The College is situated on a 204-acre site, has recently incorporated a residential component, and is currently engaging in capital expansion. It is a hub of intellectual and artistic activity and a community partner and source of economic impact and job creation for the greater Staten Island area. We serve a diverse student population from all five NYC boroughs. The college is accessible from Manhattan and Brooklyn via MTA express and limited stop buses. The English Department, where the CSI Writing program is housed, has a diverse faculty of writing professionals, linguists, and literary scholars.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. ABD applicants will be considered; however, their degree must be conferred prior to the first day of classes of fall 2026 in order to hold the position.

    Preferred qualifications include:

    + PhD in rhetoric and composition or English with primary specialization in Rhetoric and Composition

    + At least four years of teaching experience.

    + The candidate must demonstrate a significant service record in a writing program, such as with mentoring, curriculum development, assessment, or administration.

    Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate pedagogical and scholarly interest in the following areas:

    + composition theory and pedagogy

    + critical pedagogy

    + community writing

    + writing program administration

    + writing across the curriculum

    + writing in the disciplines

    COMPENSATION

    $82,389 - $87,420

     

    Salary commensurate with education and experience.

    *Salaries will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
