    Walltown Park Recreation Center is a historic community center located in the heart of Durham, serving neighborhoods with patrons from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Walltown is a full-service facility hosting a variety of program offerings tailored to and enjoyed by every age group, as well as a gymnasium, fitness center and indoor walking track. We are looking for a motivated professional to be our new Recreation Specialist at Walltown. This is an opportunity to work closely with a highly skilled team to provide great experiences for the community at this key center in Durham. In this role, you will assist in the development and implementation of diverse recreational programs. We are seeking a candidate who can exercise independent judgment, initiative and creativity, within the realm of established policies and procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Recreation Coordinator in the Parks and Recreation Department. This is a position that requires flexible scheduling to provide coverage to the facility during operational hours. Please review the schedule times listed to ensure that you can meet expectations to regularly work some evening and weekend hours.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    + Assists with planning and developing recreational, aquatics, and/or special needs programs; plans program content and related activities; conducts community surveys; instructs program participants; trains, leads, and assists with hiring lower-level staff; assists with marketing and promoting programs; and monitors program expenses.

    + Assists with facility supervision and inventory coordination, including scheduling facility use, opening and closing facilities, inspecting equipment and facilities to ensure safety and proper working condition of equipment and materials; monitors supplies; and coordinates with maintenance staff to resolve maintenance issues.

    + Performs office, program, and customer support operations; responds to inquiries, concerns, and complaints from patrons, in person, via phone or email; processes payments and deposits; registers participants; transports patrons, as assigned; performs outreach activities, as assigned, including providing information to internal and external groups.

    + Prepares, maintains, reviews, processes, and/or disseminates reports, records, requisitions, invoices, notifications, and other documentation; compiles, tracks and reports information; proofs transactions and ensures accuracy of information.

    + Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

     

    Recreation

    Positions assigned to recreation may be responsible for:

    + Assisting with developing and implementing programs.

    + Assisting with facility management, staff supervision, registration, and program development including use of recreation software, general operations assistance, and cultivating partnerships/performing outreach.

     

    Minimum Qualifications & Experience

     

    + Associate’s degree in recreation, leisure services, or a related field

    + Two years of recreation services experience in area of assignment.

    + Valid, unrestricted, North Carolina driver's license "or" if you currently have another states driver's license, must be willing and able to obtain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire

    + Must obtain Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification with Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification within the first six months of employment.

     

    Some assignments may require Basic School Age Care certification and North Carolina Early Childhood Credentials I and II within 18 months of employment.

     

    Additional Preferred Skills

     

    • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Management or a related field.

    • Experience planning and coordinating programs for youth, teens, adults, and mature adults.

    • Proficient in computer skills (Windows, Microsoft Office).

    • Experience with utilizing "ActiveNet" or other recreation software.

    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
