    Job Summary and Qualifications

    Position Summary:

    Performs all technical procedures in the department. Maintains proficiency in the performance of all technical procedures. Provides testing for patients with varying clinical conditions. Provides testing for all age ranges from newborns to geriatric patients. Performs requisition entry, specimen processing and result entry. Performs required quality control and instrument maintenance and function verification according to department guidelines. Communicates with other health care professionals. Supervises the Performance Improvement/Quality Improvement Program of the department and the Financial and Human Resource management of the department. Maintains current procedural protocols, computer files, equipment maintenance programs, and quality control data.

     

    II. Position Requirements:

    A. Licensure/Certification/Registration:

     

    MT ASCP, CLS NCA, or MT AMT required.

     

    B. Education:

     
     

    C. Experience:

     

    Four years minimum experience as a Technologist in assigned area.

     

    D. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    1. Works as a Medical Technologist by integrating current scientific knowledge with technical competency which relate to the Laboratory Department.

    a. He/she demonstrates knowledge and responsibility, and participates in the implementation of all aspects of the Safety/Chemical Hygiene Plan, Infectious/Exposure Control Plan, Electrical Safety, Disaster, Plan, and Code Blue Plan, fire Plan, Computer Systems, Compliance, Ethics, and General Laboratory.

    b. She/he shall be able to perform venipunctures and capillary collection for specimen procurement with the knowledge of age-related techniques, physical structure, and amounts of blood to be obtained.

    c. She/he shall be current technically and theoretically knowledgeable of instruments and test in medical technology.

    d. Demonstrates knowledge and responsibility for the ongoing CQI.

    e. The Hematology Supervisor will be competent to age-related Laboratory values, abuse, and communication skills.

    2. The Hematology Supervisor:

    a. Prepares a work schedule to provide adequate coverage and effective utilization of personnel.

    b. Provides technical instruction and training of personnel and/or students in techniques, instrumentation, and organization of work.

    c. May recommend selection, transfer, and organization of work.

    d. Evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.

    e. Ensures that policies and procedures are effectively followed.

    f. Strictly monitors CQI and quality control procedures within the parameters/goals set by Medical and Laboratory Director and accrediting agencies.

    g. Ensures that all tests are performed in accordance with the standards established and published in department procedure books.

    h. Ensures that results are valid and accurate prior to release.

    i. Establishes implements and monitors specimen accession, identification, and retention systems, meeting process management and external policies and regulations.

    j. Evaluates current procedures and maintains a procedural manual in accordance with CAP and other accrediting agency guidelines; reviews and revises as needed - minimum is yearly.

    k. Establishes and maintains a preventative maintenance program for all instruments, and a log system for recording all actions.

    l. Ensures equipment and instruments are in good operating condition, recognizes malfunction, takes corrective action, and reports to Laboratory Director.

    m. Maintains appropriate level of supplies and reagents.

    n. Enforces safety practices and corrects hazards that exist.

    o. Recommends capital equipment needs and replacements to Laboratory Director.

    p. Interacts in positive and professional manner with physicians and/or nurses on Laboratory results, timing and availability of test results or procedures.

    q. Keeps Laboratory and Medical Directors informed of proposed changes in techniques, procedures, protocols and all problems and/or potential problems.

    r. Participates in continuing education in laboratory medicine, management, and training skills.

    s. In-services personnel when appropriate or when a recognized need exists.

    t. Performs other related work as assigned by Laboratory Director.

    u. Is expected to be aware and read current professional literature relating to Laboratory specialty.

    v. Participation in continuing education program on site.

    w. May have 24-hour responsibilities.

    x. May perform duties in other departments other than the specifically assigned department when necessary to assure essential service to physicians and patients.

    y. Enforces Laboratory and Hospital policies.

    z. May act as Laboratory Director when assigned.

     

    aa. Provides general direction and leadership for assigned employees.

     

    bb. Must set an example for employees to follow.

     

    cc. Assists in a variety of job-related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director.
