Postdoctoral Associate / Sr. Postdoctoral Associate
The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for the Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral position. The title/rank will be contingent upon the selected candidate's skills and experience in their area of expertise.
Postdoctoral Associate
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by January 1, 2026. Experience with at-sea data collection. Experience with zooplankton sampling or underwater acoustics. Programming experience in R, Matlab, Python, or other statistical languages.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Oceanography, Acoustics, Marine Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Fisheries Science, or a related field. Experience leading research cruise or fieldwork expeditions. Experience analyzing acoustic backscatter data. Experience collecting and analyzing zooplankton net samples. Experience with moored instruments. Experience in data analysis using advanced statistics or other quantitative analyses. Scientific diving certification. Knowledge of hand tools and machine / woodshop tools.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Joseph Warren (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/somas/people/\_profiles/joe-warren.php) . The selected candidate will investigate water column acoustic backscatter and the organisms that cause this scattering. Successful candidates will have strong communication skills, both written and oral.
Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:
• Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, process and analyze net tow, acoustic backscatter, and other data sets.
• Assist in the preparation of reports, manuscripts, and other documentation.
• Build, maintain, and repair at-sea and deployed platforms.
• Organize, prepare, and lead research cruises.
• Other duties as assigned.
Senior Postdoctoral Associate

The Senior Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Joseph Warren (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/somas/people/\_profiles/joe-warren.php) working on highly complex, and technically broad challenges and problems such as the investigations of water column acoustic backscatter and the organisms that cause this scattering. Successful candidates will have strong communication skills, both written and oral.
Senior Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:
• Process and analyze net tow, acoustic backscatter, and other data sets.
• Prepare reports, manuscripts, and other documentation.
• Build, maintain, and repair at-sea and deployed platforms
• Organize, prepare, and lead research cruises
• Assist in the supervision of students and volunteers.
• Other duties as assigned.
Special Notes:
Both the Senior Postdoctoral Associate and Postdoctoral Associate position will require extended work days and time away at sea, estimated to be typically 1-2 days per trip with an occasional trip possibly of longer duration (5-10 days), trips would occur ~ 6-10 times per year.
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
