Our New York–based team is seeking a **Senior Mechanical Engineer** to support mission-critical data center projects across the **New York** metro area and the broader Northeast region. Arup is recognized globally for delivering innovative, high-performance, and sustainable solutions for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise clients.

     

    In this role, you will design and implement state-of-the-art mechanical systems for mission-critical facilities in one of the most demanding regulatory and urban environments in the world. You will address challenges related to energy efficiency, decarbonization, resiliency, urban constraints, and operational reliability, while navigating local codes, utility requirements, and climate-driven design considerations. Leveraging Arup’s global mission-critical network, tools, and technical expertise, you will help deliver integrated solutions that meet owner objectives and advance the data center industry toward a more sustainable and resilient future.

     

    _This role is based in New York City, with flexibility to support projects throughout the Northeast._

    The Opportunity

    + Lead mechanical engineering design for mission-critical data center projects, including chilled-water and DX cooling systems, airside distribution, CRAH/CRAC configurations, thermal management strategies, and high-efficiency hydronic plant systems.

    + Deliver resilient designs tailored to dense urban environments, addressing space constraints, noise and vibration, redundancy requirements, constructability, and phased build-outs.

    + Coordinate closely with electrical, ICT, structural, fire/life safety, and commissioning teams—as well as project managers—to deliver fully integrated, scalable, and highly available data center solutions.

    + Assist, supervise, and mentor junior engineers; provide timely feedback, recognition, and technical guidance to support a high-performance engineering culture.

    + Maintain strong client relationships with hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data center clients, supporting successful delivery, repeat work, and long-term partnerships.

    + Prepare drawings, specifications, technical reports, basis-of-design documents, and presentation materials that align with NYC and Northeast codes, utility requirements, and industry standards (ASHRAE TC 9.9, Uptime Institute, etc.).

    + Present technical material to both technical and non-technical audiences through design workshops, client reviews, regulatory discussions, and internal knowledge-sharing forums.

    + Participate in local and national mission-critical and data center organizations to stay current with evolving technologies, codes, and market trends.

    + Own quality standards, risk identification, commercial performance, and client engagement for assigned projects.

    The Skills

    + Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering required.

    + Minimum 6 years of professional experience designing HVAC systems, with 2–3+ years focused on data center or mission-critical facilities, including cooling plant design, redundancy planning, thermal modeling, and airside/hydronic systems.

    + Experience working within New York City and Northeast regulatory environments strongly preferred.

    + Proficiency in Revit MEP; experience with CFD modeling, load calculations, and mechanical system analysis is a plus.

    + Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines in fast-paced project environments.

    + Confident presenter with strong commercial and financial awareness.

    + Highly organized, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

    + Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred; data-center-specific certifications or coursework (Uptime, ASHRAE, DCEP, etc.) are a plus.

    **New York / New Jersey Hiring Range** - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in NY/NJ is $122,500 to $148,450 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of NY/NJ will differ.
