Job Description
This position serves as an assistant to Park Recreation Supervisor 12 in a highly complex Park and Recreation unit. This unit consist of Indian Lake State Park, Palms Book State Park, Wagner Falls Scenic Site, Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park, Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, rustic state campgrounds, boating access sites, non-motorized pathways, and ORV trailheads in Schoolcraft & Alger Counties. This includes the supervision of a lead ranger, 3 ranger E’s, janitor, explore guide, and 18 SW 04’s. The purpose of this position is to provide high quality recreational opportunities to the public, while preserving and balancing the protection of natural resources. This person performs scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the Unit, checking quality and quantity of work. Competency in leadership skills, safety and maintenance, public relations and financial management is required. This person will regard safety as a personal responsibility and respect the safety of other employees and the public. This employee represents the Division with the legislative, local governmental units and business groups in relation to the administration of State Lands and facilities under his/her jurisdiction.
This position requires that the employee hold a DNR Law Enforcement Commission.
As a requirement for this position, attendance at the Parks and Recreation Division Law Enforcement Academy and Ranger Operations Academy is required. These are two separate trainings typically totaling 12 weeks with courses intended to increase your physical ability to handle incidents, increase your knowledge of Parks & Recreation Rules as well as park operations. These trainings will require overnight stays in / at a learning facility.
In order to be eligible for a Commissioned Park and Recreation position, you must:
+ Pass a pre-employment physical examination conducted by a health care provider designated by the Parks and Recreation Division.
+ Successfully pass the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
+ Be at least 21 years of age before graduation from the Parks and Recreation Law Academy.
+ Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Michigan driver’s license.
+ Possess a driving record free of suspension or revocation for two years prior to attendance of the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
+ Possess a driving record free of any moving violations for two years prior to attendance of the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
+ Possess a clean criminal record absent of any felony convictions or high court misdemeanors.

Some positions within this class series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.
