Summary:
Meta Reality Labs is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist Intern to join our Optics and Photonics team. As part of our mission to build the next generation of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices, you will contribute to pioneering research in advanced display technologies. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of optical science, leveraging state-of-the-art simulation tools and hands-on prototyping to develop innovative solutions for near-eye displays. You will collaborate with world-class researchers and cross-functional teams, driving impactful research that shapes the future of immersive experiences at Meta.Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.
Required Skills:
Research Scientist Intern, Optics and Photonics (PhD) Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with researchers and cross-functional partners, effectively communicating research plans, progress, and results
2. Publish research findings and contribute to projects that directly influence Meta product development
3. Develop key subsystems for next-generation AR/VR displays, focusing on advanced simulations and prototyping to validate new concepts and assess their perceptual impact
4. Work closely with the Meta Reality Labs Research team to explore novel solutions for AR/VR devices
5. Investigate applications of geometric, diffractive, and wave optics, as well as photonic devices, through simulation and experimentation to create innovative near-eye display concepts

6. Currently pursuing or in the process of obtaining a PhD in Physics, Optical Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field
7. Must have work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
8. 2+ years of experience in at least one of the following areas of optical research: fundamental electromagnetics, wave optics, polarization optics, geometrical optics, ray tracing, optical bench-top experiments, or nanophotonics, with an emphasis on modeling and prototyping
9. 2+ years of experience with wave optics and/or geometric optics design programs
10. 2+ years of experience in experimental optics and laboratory work (e.g., experience constructing proof-of-concept systems and evaluating performance)
11. Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python or Matlab
12. Intent to return to a degree program after completion of the internship/co-op

13. Experience with nano-photonics solvers (e.g., RCWA, FDFD) and simulation software (Lumerical, COMSOL, meep, or similar)
14. Experience in metasurface design, diffractive optics, holography, nanophotonics, wave optics, and/or computer-generated holography
15. Proven track record of significant research achievements, as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, and first-authored publications at leading conferences (e.g., CLEO, SID, SPIE, Optica)
16. Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a collaborative team environment
Public Compensation:
$7,313/month to $12,134/month + benefits
