The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine Atmospheric and Earth Science invites applications for a Research Associate Professor position in the field of boundary layer meteorology and hurricane prediction. This position in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in boundary layer dynamics and air-sea interaction in high wind conditions working alongside a diverse and talented group of scientists and educators. The start date of this position is August 15, 2026.
mos Responsibilities:
+ Conduct original research in the field of boundary layer meteorology and hurricane prediction, with an emphasis on advancing our understanding of the role of boundary-layer processes and air-sea interaction in hurricane intensity change.
+ Develop and apply state-of-the-art turbulence parameterizations for hurricane forecast models and collect unique observational datasets to address research questions related to hurricane intensity prediction and predictability.
+ Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences.
+ Collaborate with colleagues and external partners on interdisciplinary research projects.
+ Mentor graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, fostering their growth and development.
+ Departmental teaching is not expected, but opportunities can be mutually negotiated with the department.
+ Seek external funding to support research activities and projects.
+ Utilize experience in science communication and outreach to disseminate research findings to a broader audience, including the general public and policymakers.
+ Apply research-to-operations experience to bridge the gap between cutting-edge hurricane boundary layer research and practical applications, contributing to real-world decision-making and solutions.
+ Demonstrate a proven record of successful collaboration on boundary layer related projects and initiatives, contributing to the development of operational hurricane prediction products based on scientific research.
+ Leverage experience with a cooperative institute to enhance collaborative research efforts and strengthen partnerships between academia and government agencies.
Qualifications:
+ Ph.D. in Applied Marine Physics or a closely related field .
+ Over 15 years of experience in boundary layer research and hurricane prediction.
+ A strong record of peer-reviewed publications in turbulence structure, boundary layer dynamics, air-sea interaction, and hurricane intensity change.
+ Expertise in tropical cyclone science communication and outreach.
+ Expertise in boundary layer modeling, hurricane field experiment, and observational data analysis.
+ Proven ability to secure external research funding.
+ Effective communication skills, both written and oral, to disseminate research findings and collaborate with a diverse community of scientists and students.
+ A demonstrated ability to collaborate with governmental organizations to bridge the gap between research and operational applications.
The application material should include:
