    Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

    Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Education, or a related field. Three (3) years of full time experience working with young adults with disabilities in an educational or community setting. Knowledge and experience with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience assessing documentation and creating accommodation plans. Clinical experience providing crisis intervention, including suicide risk assessment and management. Leadership experience. Experience with legal issues and case law related to disability services in higher education. Experience working in testing center operations.

    Brief Description of Duties:

    The Assistant Director of Accessibility, Testing, and Operational Services provides leadership and operational oversight for accessibility and testing services within the Student Accessibility Support Center (SASC). This position ensures equitable access for students with disabilities through policy development, service coordination, and compliance with federal and state laws. The Assistant Director serves as a key member of the department’s leadership team, representing SASC in campus-wide initiatives related to accessibility, testing, and universal design. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Accessibility and Counseling Services and supervises Testing Coordinators, Accessibility Technologists, Administrative Support Staff, and Student Assistants. Incumbent must have leadership experience with the ability to influence across institutional levels.

    Testing

    + The Assistant Director oversees testing center operations and staff, ensuring compliance, high service quality, and secure administration of high-stakes exams. They supervise, train, and support professional and support staff, provide technical guidance, and respond to crises. They track operational data to improve processes, evaluate emerging technologies for accessibility and efficiency, and coordinate with faculty, vendors, and credentialing agencies.

    Policy Development & Strategic Planning

    + The Assistant Director assists the Associate Director in developing strategies, partnerships, and initiatives to advance SASC’s mission. They collaborate to create, implement, and review departmental policies, procedures, and best practices. The incumbent ensures SASC remains current with legislation, research, national trends, and resources for students with disabilities in higher education. They provide leadership in the Associate Director’s absence and support the Assistant Director of Counseling and Support as needed.

    Reporting and Compliance

    + The Assistant Director collects, analyzes, and presents data on departmental operations and outcomes to inform decision-making and continuous improvement. The role leads compliance efforts related to audits and reviews, developing policies and procedures to ensure adherence to ADA, Section 504/508, and related standards. In addition, the Assistant Director oversees accessibility software and data systems, ensuring data integrity for reporting and compliance purposes. They also support the pursuit of grants, vendor contracts, and external funding opportunities to expand accessibility services for students.

    Faculty, Student, and Campus Consultation

    + The Assistant Director provides consultation, training, and guidance for faculty, administrators, students, families, and campus partners to support accessible academic experiences, including classroom accommodations and ensuring they are properly implemented. They adjudicate and resolve concerns regarding the provision of accessibility services, offer resources to address issues, and maintain clear communication with the AVP for SHWAPS during the Director’s and Executive Director’s absence.

    Student Intake, Academic Counseling & Support

    + The Assistant Director conducts intake interviews, evaluates eligibility for accommodations, and monitors student progress. They provide academic support counseling and assist students in developing problem-solving approaches. They maintain accurate records, collaborate with campus units during crises, and provide referrals to academic advising, CAPS, Student Health Services, University Police, and other relevant offices.

    Crisis Response & Emergency Management

    + The Assistant Director intervenes in high-risk student situations, providing guidance and oversight for SASC staff. They ensure timely and effective intervention in coordination with campus safety, Student Health Services, CAPS, and other relevant offices. The incumbent maintains clear communication with the Director, Executive Director, and AVP for SHWAPS during emergencies, evaluates the effectiveness of response protocols, and implements improvements to mitigate future risks. They also develop and deliver training to staff on crisis management procedures, ensuring preparedness across all SASC operations. They provide consultation on emergency care coordination and may be required to work evenings and weekends.

    Professional Development and Committee Involvement

    + Participate in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars). Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs). Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

    Special Notes:

    This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

     

    **Salary** : $75,000-$77,000 $4,000 Location Pay = $79,000-$81,000 Total Compensation

     

    In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

     

    **Essential Position:** This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
