Position Description
The Police Crisis Counselor shall serve as a counselor in the Professional Wellness Section (PWS) of the Behavioral Health Services Division of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD). The Police Crisis Counselor shall be directly accountable to the PWS Counseling Supervisor for the proper administration of duties. This position performs the professional duties involved in providing counseling to Police personnel and their families. Performs related duties as required.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is a 24/7/365 operation. Typical Duties
+ Acts as a liaison between the Police Department and local mental health agencies and hospitals.
+ Maintains confidential records and write detailed reports.
+ Keeps abreast of current techniques and procedures used in handling crisis situations.
+ Conducts counseling groups, couple/marital counseling, and counseling of youth and adolescents.
+ Provides counseling assistance as needed.
+ Refers individuals or families with problems beyond our scope of services to appropriate agencies.
+ Counsels police officers and their families as needed.
+ Develops treatment plans with behavioral and situational objectives .
+ Provides instruction to police trainees and officers on wellness topics.
+ Performs administrative duties.
+ Speaks to professionals and other community groups.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's Degree in a field of Behavioral Science, such as Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of clinical counseling experience in a mental health related setting.

Valid Driver License
Employees in this classification must maintain certification or licensing in a counseling related field at a minimum of the Master's level from the State of Tennessee. Failure to maintain the required licensing or certification may result in termination.
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Experience in working with or in a law enforcement setting
+ Experience in Trauma-informed counseling interventions
+ Certification in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
+ Knowledge of policies and procedures used by local mental health agencies and hospitals
