    This position is for a strategy internship with the Microsoft Health Futures (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/lab/microsoft-health-futures/) group at Microsoft Research in Redmond (USA). Health Futures is responsible for research, incubation, product engineering, and strategic partnerships that drive cross-company strategy, as well as value creation in the health and life sciences. We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers, scientists, engineers, biotechnologists, designers, social scientists, strategists, healthcare experts, and medical professionals who endeavor to develop next-generation methods and tools for health and healthcare. We offer a unique vibrant environment that features cutting-edge academic research, enterprise software development, and real-world delivery, with close feedback loops and rapid iterations among all three, much like a lean startup.     Our team drives new opportunities, manages partnerships, and leads impact, and operations across Health Futures. Specifically, we are responsible for guiding the overall strategic vision of the organization, executing cross-functional operations, and leading partnership development in early stages of the project funnel, as well as closely supporting our research teams throughout the duration of their research.

     

    We are looking for a Research Intern to join the Strategy & Operations team within Health Futures. You will be paired with mentors and play a critical role in the success of our current and future program investments by developing meaningful analyses from market and scientific data. The role will require an interdisciplinary approach and willingness to collaborate widely with projects and stakeholders across Health Futures and the broader Microsoft organization.

    Responsibilities

    Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

    Additional Responsibilities

    + Contribute to driving the strategic vision for Health Futures across our healthcare and life sciences focus areas.

    + Produce high quality discussion and presentation materials (e.g., landscape / competitive assessment, financial modeling and business case development, etc.) to facilitate engaging discussions with internal and external stakeholders.

    + Contribute to pipeline management by substantiating partnership rationale and data acquisition strategy in the context of market trends and Microsoft’s strategy.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    + Currently enrolled in an advanced degree program (PhD, MBA, MS / MA, etc.).

    Other Requirements

    + Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

    + In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position as well as a cover letter and any relevant work or research samples. After you submit your application, a request for letters may be sent to your list of references on your behalf. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + At least 2 years of experience in life sciences, pharma, biotech.

    + Interested in the life sciences and are excited about the intersection of AI and healthcare.

    + Demonstrated strategic, analytical, and creative thinking skills.

    + Comfortable working in ambiguous and / or complex environments.

    + Intellectually curious and able to see things from different points of view.

    + Ability to absorb complex technical and scientific information and creatively distill into key takeaways, crisp analyses, presentations, and narratives.

    + Highly collaborative and able to build trusting relationships across multiple stakeholders.

    + Proficient interpersonal skills, with prior experience working across multiple teams and functions, including the ability to effectively support management of stakeholders internally.

    + Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

     

    Applied Sciences IC2 - The base pay range for this internship is USD $5,610 - $11,010 per month.

     

    There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $7,270 - $12,030 per month.

     

    Applied Sciences IC3 - The base pay range for this internship is USD $6,710 - $13,270 per month.
