Position Summary
The Emergency Department Clinical Operations Coordinator serves as the lead Patient Care Technician and key administrative support for the Emergency Department at Hunterdon Health. This role combines advanced clinical proficiency with leadership and operational oversight to promote a seamless, efficient, and patient-centered environment. The Coordinator supports the Nurse Manager and clinical leadership team in ensuring safe, high-quality patient care and departmental excellence through staff mentorship, workflow coordination, and quality improvement initiatives.
Primary Position Responsibilities
1. Leadership & Staff Support Serve as the primary resource, mentor, and role model for Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) and Unit Coordinators (UCs), fostering professional growth, accountability, and teamwork. Assist the Nurse Manager with daily PCT and UC assignments, staffing adjustments, and communication of workflow priorities. Support onboarding, training, and competency validation for new and existing PCTs/UCs. Participate in peer feedback, performance discussions, and staff meetings to promote engagement and continuous improvement. Serve as a contributing member of the Emergency Department Leadership Team.
2. Clinical & Operational Oversight Support efficient patient flow by collaborating with charge nurses, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to minimize wait times and optimize care delivery. Provide direct patient care within the PCT scope of practice, including but not limited to vital signs, EKGs, specimen collection, and patient transport. Ensure supply rooms, equipment, and patient care areas are organized, clean, and adequately stocked. Monitor equipment functionality and coordinate maintenance or replacement as needed. Actively contribute to a safe, efficient, and responsive emergency care environment.
3. Administrative & Quality Functions Partner with the Nurse Manager to collect, review, and report on quality and performance metrics, including throughput and patient satisfaction data. Participate in departmental projects, audits, and process improvement initiatives aligned with Hunterdon Health’s mission and strategic goals. Support policy implementation, adherence to regulatory standards, and readiness for surveys (e.g., The Joint Commission). Serve as a communication link between the PCT/UC team and leadership, ensuring timely updates and consistent expectations.
4. Assistance with total patient care under the direction of the RN Consistency provides total patient care under the direction of the RN. Provides Activities of Daily living (i.e. feeds, baths, sets up for meals, mouth care, peri care, Foley care etc.). Changes incontinent patients and reports skin condition to the RN. Maintains patient data under the direction of the RN and reports findings back (i.e. Vital signs, weights, glucoscans, I &O etc.). Uses knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriately to the age of the patient.
5. Promotes Patient Safety Consistently promotes a clean, safe, quiet environment while providing patient care. Recognizes, utilizes and maintains safety measures while providing transfers and transport. Knowledgeable about safety protocols (restraints, suicide, falls and isolation precautions, proper hand washing and use of safe handling equipment). Delivers peer to peer communication during beside report, and throughout the shift (breaks, lunch, or anytime leaving the unit). Performs purposeful hourly rounding. Observed answering call light immediately. Reports deterioration in patient condition to the RN including changes in vital signs. Reports environmental hazards and faulty equipment to the appropriate person/department. Updates the RN when tasks cannot be completed.
6. Performs collection of blood specimens and EKG’s as ordered by the physician Consistently demonstrates proficiency with a variety of collection techniques: venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and the ability to use a butterfly. Follows all policies and procedures for blood draws, adhering to all laboratory safety and collection guidelines. (wearing gloves, disposing of needles properly) Draws blood from appropriate locations (never above an IV site). Correctly identifies patient according to approved protocols 100% of the time: Check ID bands. Properly labels in correct tube at bedside with patient’s full name, medical record number, date, time, and initials. Complies with proper labeling protocols for all Blood Bank specimens. Responds to STATS within 10 minutes, time-stamps and delivers specimens to appropriate personnel. Follows all policies and procedures when doing EKG’s. Responds to STAT calls within 10 minutes. Codes under 5 minutes.
7. Other Duties as Assigned Consistently performs other duties as assigned. Prepares assigned patients for OR and/or procedures as directed by the RN. Delivers specimens to the lab and supplies/equipment to and from unit as requested.
Qualifications
Education
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred:
Associate’s degree or coursework in healthcare or leadership preferred.
Experience
Required:
Minimum 3 years of experience as a Patient Care Technician, Emergency Department Technician, or similar clinical support role in an acute care setting.
Preferred:
Prior experience in a lead or supervisory capacity strongly preferred.
License
Required:
BLS certification required (American Heart Association). CNA / MA / EMT certification required. EKG and phlebotomy competency required.
Skills
Required:
Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and guide peers. Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced emergency environment. Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and basic computer applications.
