Summary The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for National Parks of Eastern North Carolina is April to September but the season may be extended or reduced due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2026. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 01/11/2026 whichever comes first. Responsibilities Performs skilled work on low-voltage and standard electrical systems, including lighting, outlets, breakers, and control panels in visitor centers, housing units, and maintenance facilities. Ensures compliance with NEC and NPS safety standards. Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs water supply, drainage, and sewage systems in park buildings and campgrounds. Responds to leaks, clogs, and fixture failures, ensuring systems function reliably in high-humidity, salt-air environments. Services and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including split systems, heat pumps, and dehumidifiers. Ensures proper climate control in sensitive areas such as historic structures and visitor centers. Performs scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance on mechanical systems to reduce downtime and extend equipment life. Identifies and corrects potential issues before they become critical. Provides rapid response to urgent maintenance issues, including power outages, water line breaks, and HVAC failures, minimizing disruption to park operations and visitor services. Area Information: Position is within the Division of Maintenance and support the maintenance of park structures within the facilities maintenance and operations program for all three Outer Banks Group parks - Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial. Position duty station is located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Buxton NC for Hatteras Island maintenance. Cape Hatteras National Seashore (https://www.nps.gov/caha): Cape Hatteras National Seashore was designated as the first National Seashore in the National Park Service and preserves the wild and primitive character of the everchanging barrier islands, protects the diverse plant and animal communities sustained by the coastal island processes, and provides for recreational use and enjoyment that is compatible with preserving the distinctive natural and cultural resources. The Outer Banks are comprised by several towns including Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Buxton, and Ocracoke. The area is a beach destination. The beaches, as well as Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, provide exceptional recreational opportunities, such as fishing, surfing, boating, and many other watersports. There are several highly rated elementary, middle, and high schools and numerous extracurricular activities available for children. These towns all have homes for sale or rent and are within reasonable driving distance. The Outer Banks has many modern conveniences, such as grocery stores, retail shopping, banks, a hospital, and many restaurants. Cost of living on the Outer Banks is somewhat expensive as compared to other eastern North Carolina communities. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. The incumbent's clothing may become soiled from· grease, dust, and chemicals. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falling, bums, broken bones and chemical vapors, constant noise, rotating machinery, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fumes and infectious blood pathogens when working in or about systems. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and bums from chemicals. The incumbent is required to wear prescribed safety equipment and to adhere to safety rules and regulations, and standards as set by OSHA and the Park's established Safety Plan.
