    Summary The primary purpose of this position is to perform standard painting duties associated with the treatment, preparation, and coating of wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, or other surfaces. Responsibilities Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates. Applications received by the initial cutoff date will be considered first. **INITIAL CUT OFF IS Monday, January 5th, 2026** Applications will be considered throughout the open period of the announcement however additional referral certificates will only be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificate and/or additional vacancies need to be filled. Duties: Prepares and paints and exterior and interior surfaces. Mixes, thins, matches, tints and tones coating materials following specific oral and written directives. Applies coating materials such as primers paint, varnishes, shellacs, using standard application methods and ensures that coating meets surface protection requirements. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and maintains a safe and clean environment. Isle Royale National Park: Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote, and isolated island in the northwestern corner of Lake Superior. With numerous lakes and native wildlife such as moose and wolves, the park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking, and more. Isle Royale is located approximately 70 miles north of the park's administrative headquarters in Houghton, MI. Isle Royale is 99% federally-designated Wilderness with no roads, few telephones, no cellular coverage, limited amenities, and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland. The primary mode of travel throughout the island is by boat or hiking. Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours. Government provided Wi-Fi is also available at most duty stations. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on incumbent's specific duty station on the island. To protect Isle Royale's fauna from disease and other maladies, pets are prohibited. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Motorboat Operation/Instructor Certification Course: Applicant must be able to obtain a Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) or Motorboat Operator Instructor Certification Course (MOICC) or equivalent after entrance on duty date. Drug Testing: You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Government Housing: May be available. Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of materials Practices in Construction, Structure Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) SCREENOUT: Possess work experience as a Painter in operation, practices, tools, equipment and painting materials. Ability to satisfactorily work accomplish coating work including camouflage work by standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying, apply other related methods and techniques as cutting-in techniques and dip and overflow methods so that surfaces are fully coated and free from drips and runs, and to read and follow directions that explain how to apply and use prepared solvents and thin, mix, and stir coating materials. Skilled in standard finish processes such as hammer tone, wrinkle, and non-skid finishes which are applied as per set process. Has had safety training in this or related occupation. Can recognize obvious hazards, follow safety directions and precautions and not endanger self or co-workers. Completed projects were spot checked by a supervisor during and at the time of completion. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: The employee prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard to reach places. The incumbent must have the ability to lift, carry and set up materials and equipment that weighs up to 10 pounds, and occasionally, may be required to handle materials and equipment that weighs 40 pounds and over. Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The employee is sometimes required to prepare, treat, and coat surfaces outside in all types of weather.
