    Position Description:

    The Department of Animal and Food Sciences in Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full time, 9-month, tenure track Assistant Professor position in Equine Science, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2026. The distribution of effort for this appointment is 60% teaching, 35% research, and 5% service.

     

    This position will advance the department’s leadership in equine education, experiential learning, and engagement with the performance horse industry, including oversight of a nationally competitive Intercollegiate Horse Judging Team. The role is strategically aligned to strengthen the integration of teaching, research, and outreach in equine and animal science, supporting workforce readiness and student success across career pathways.

     

    The successful candidate will be expected to teach outcome driven undergraduate and graduate courses in equine evaluation, science, and management. The candidate is also expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program that supports graduate student mentorship and results in peer reviewed publications and other scholarly outputs. Service to the department, college, university, and profession is an expectation of all faculty in Animal and Food Sciences.

    Major/Essential Functions:

    As a faculty member in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, the successful candidate will be expected to:

    Teaching and Mentorship

    + Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Equine and Animal Science, with primary responsibility for courses such as Equine Selection and Evaluation, as well as equine science or management classes.

    + Provide leadership and coaching for the Texas Tech Horse Judging Team, maintaining a tradition of national competitiveness and student excellence.

    + Develop and deliver innovative instructional materials, laboratories, and experiential learning opportunities that enhance student engagement and skill development.

    + Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, fostering professional growth, leadership, and career readiness.

    + Contribute to recruitment, retention, and experiential learning initiatives that strengthen TTU’s equine and animal science programs.

    Research and Scholarly Activity

    + Develop an independent, externally funded research program in equine or animal science, with emphasis in equine nutrition, health, or exercise physiology.

    + Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific and professional conferences.

    + Collaborate with departmental, college, and university faculty to enhance multidisciplinary research that benefits the equine industry and supports the One Health framework.

    + Engage undergraduate and graduate students in research and scholarly activity that enhances experiential learning and industry relevance.

    Service and Outreach

    + Provide active service to the department, college, and university through committee participation and faculty governance.

    + Engage with stakeholders and industry partners through workshops, judging contests, youth events, and outreach activities that advance the visibility and impact of TTU’s equine programs.

    + Support extension, outreach, and engagement programs associated with the Texas Tech Equestrian Center and the broader equine community.

    + Foster a collegial, inclusive environment that values teamwork, diversity, and student success

    Preferred Qualifications:

    In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

    + Evidence of excellence in teaching, including student evaluations, peer review, curriculum development, or assessment of learning outcomes.

    + Research training or experience focused on equine nutrition, physiology, or sports performance.

    + Experience managing student research projects and providing effective mentorship in both classroom and research settings.

    + Record of success in Horse Judging as a participant and/or coach, with experience leading a competitive collegiate team.

    + Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines in equine and animal science.

    + Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and a record of engagement in student extracurricular or experiential learning programs.

    The Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources includes the departments of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education and Communications, Animal and Food Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Plant and Soil Science, and Veterinary Sciences, along with multiple research centers and institutes.     Faculty Qualifications:

    + Education: Ph.D. in Equine Science, Animal Science, or a closely related field, conferred by the first day of employment.

    + Teaching Experience: Demonstrated experience in teaching or assisting with courses in Equine or Animal Science (graduate teaching experience satisfies this requirement).

    + Research Productivity: Evidence of preparing research proposals, securing or seeking external funding, and conducting and publishing peer-reviewed research.

    + Industry Experience: Demonstrated experience working directly with horses and with constituents of the equine industry.

    + Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to use modern media and instructional technologies.

    + Student Engagement: Demonstrated commitment to supporting and engaging students with varied backgrounds, perspectives, and career interests through effective teaching, mentoring, and participation in laboratory, field-based, or competitive team learning experiences in equine and animal sciences.

    + Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
