Objectives/Purpose of Job:
The Senior Manager is a member of the Pharma and Lens Care Solutions Technical Services team, responsible for providing strategic technical leadership and project oversight to the Global Plastics and Packaging Engineering Team within the Pharmaceuticals/Consumer business vertical.
The Senior Manager leads a team of Primary and Secondary Packaging Engineers who provide packaging solutions covering R&D, manufacturing and commercial operations both internally and externally. Included are activities related to supply continuity, sustainability, cost improvements, innovative designs and material selections, competitive analysis and voice of customer input.
The Senior Manager may support strategic initiatives or special projects across the broader organization. This position to be located in Rochester, NY, Greenville, SC or Tampa, FL.
Key Activities/Responsibilities
Packaging Innovation + Cost Improvement
+ Champion the Packaging Innovation Process, combining Voice of the Customer and Commercial Inputs to provide differentiated, value-added Packaging.
+ Provide packaging solutions by evaluating structural package designs for cost effectiveness, considering material options, global sourcing, manufacturability, handling cost, pallet and container utilization, innovation of structure, ship tests and stability tests.
+ May support packaging specific business development activities, including due diligence and strategic partnerships.
Supply Continuity
+ Ensure packaging compliance with necessary regulations (ISO, USP, FDA, EMA, etc.) and applicable testing methods for use in pharmaceutical and medical device applications.
+ Support the commercial packaging operations at multiple internal and contractor manufacturers locations to ensure uninterrupted product supply.
+ Provide technical guidance and input to the specification, installation, utilization, qualification, and improvement of packaging equipment.
+ Develop, manage and sustain documentation of new package designs to ensure high level accuracy and consistency including technical and compliance oversight to protocol generation, report closeouts and technical packages.
+ Provide technical support for the vendor evaluation and selection process.
Leadership & Talent Management
+ Lead and manage a team of plastics and packaging engineers to ensure successful execution of projects and programs.
+ Provide coaching, mentorship, and career development opportunities for engineering staff.
+ Collaborate with HR to attract, retain and grow high-performing talent.
+ Manage the performance, succession planning, and annual compensation process for their assigned team. Address performance challenges constructively and proactively.
+ Create technology roadmaps and develop execution plans.
+ Grow department DFSS and Six Sigma capabilities.
Budget Management
+ Create and manage department budgets.
+ Provide budget / forecast expense input for plastics and packaging project requirements both externally and internally.
+ Take on individual project leadership roles as required.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Training
Education:
+ Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline.
Experience:
+ 10+ years of relevant packaging experience in a regulated pharmaceutical or medical device industry and with minimum 3 yrs management experience (or equivalent) with direct reports.
Special Skills:
+ Experience in one or multiple packaging disciplines including materials and closure systems, design of secondary and tertiary components, component compatibility and advanced validation methodologies (IQ/OQ/PQ/PV).
+ Experience with packaging for sterile products, including extractables and leachables is highly desired.
+ Experience with new product development and structured phase gate processes.
+ Advanced knowledge of cGMPs and associated CMC regulatory considerations in a pharmaceutical/biotech environment.
+ Excellent communication, organization, and presentation skills required.
+ Computer Literacy with skills in MS Office applications and project management tools.
+ Demonstrated business acumen.
+ A thorough understanding in the selection and identification of primary and secondary package components, materials, and delivery systems.
+ Demonstrated ability in designing packaging specifications, qualifying and validating packaging materials, components and processes, and resolving technical issues with component suppliers and contractor facilities.
+ **Process Improvement:**
+ Proven expertise in designing, implementing, and monitoring process improvement initiatives.
+ Troubleshoot packaging operations utilizing relevant KPIs/performance metrics for packaging projects and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
+ **Systems Thinking & Operational Efficiency:**
+ Experience defining and implementing policies, procedures, and systems to drive organizational effectiveness and sustainable packaging initiatives and compliance with emerging environmental standards.

Eligibility for Internal Applicants:
1. Have no corrective actions at the written warning level in last six months / no final warning level in the last 12 months / no active PIP.

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting pay for this role is between $170,000.00 and $185,000.00. The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors.
