FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Black Studies Department at The City College of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Black Studies who is firmly situated, trained, and credentialed in the field of Black Studies. Candidates should possess a PhD in hand by August, 2026. In addition, the faculty member’s research and teaching area should be centered in the social sciences. Black Studies is an interdisciplinary, collaborative department focused on the study of the African diaspora, the intellectual contributions of major African and African American scholars and cultural workers, and the crucial issues confronting peoples of African descent throughout the world. Black Studies faculty are committed to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship and are engaged with the Harlem community and beyond. As a socially engaged department, Black Studies maintains a prominent and public facing platform with the Langston Hughes Festival, Black History Month, the 1969 Takeover Commemorations, and additional community and socially-engaged programming. As a newly reestablished Department at a Minority- and Hispanic-Serving Institution located in Harlem, the Department is committed to increasing the academic course offerings to grow the major, minor, and accelerated master’s degree.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a diverse student population while maintaining an active agenda of scholarship and participating in student mentoring, in departmental and college service activities in a large public university setting.
