    Duties Description The Department of American Studies/Media and Communications at State University of New York at Old Westbury is seeking applications for a full-time Assistant Professor starting in Fall 2026. We seek candidates in one or more of the following specializations:- multiplatform media and/or journalism;- strategic communications and/or advocacy media;- community and/or social justice journalism;- investigative reporting.Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated ability to contribute to our department's media studies offerings and multidisciplinary degrees, and in particular to our new Black Studies major. Professional experience in multimedia, transmedia, and/or digital media environment, as well as a strong foundation in multimedia ethics and best practices, preferred. A record of early adoption and creative implementation of new technologies is a plus. Responsibilities include teaching foundation courses (Multimedia Journalism, Writing for Media), media studies courses, as well as advanced courses in multimedia journalism and storytelling.Professional responsibilities include consistently strong teaching, ongoing successful transmedia journalism output, student advisement, and departmental and campus service. Service includes support of student media outlets while mentoring students as they create multiplatform portfolios and secure related internships in journalism/media. Experience teaching an ethnically diverse, working student body preferred.The Department of American Studies / Media and Communications houses a B.A. in Media and Communications, a B.A. in American Studies, and a B.A. in Black Studies. The department also offers content courses in our School of Education's Master of Arts in Teaching degree and steers the interdisciplinary Master of Liberal Studies degree.

     

    Minimum Qualifications Minimum Requirements:A master's degree in journalism, MFA, terminal degree in media or a related field, and/or significant experience in multiplatform media production will also be considered.Expertise in one or more of the following areas: multiplatform media and/or journalism; strategic communications and/or advocacy media; community and/or social justice journalism; investigative reporting.Demonstrated ability to contribute to the department's multidisciplinary programs, and in particular to our new Black Studies major.Ability to teach media studies courses.Preferred Qualifications:Previous experience teaching at the college level.Experience teaching or mentoring an ethnically diverse, working student population.A record of professional multimedia and/or transmedia or journalistic production, in a contemporary newsroom and/or digital nonfiction media environment.Ability to independently teach media production.Ability to teach PR/strategic communications.Experience addressing issues of gender, race/ethnicity, immigration, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented communities.
