    About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

    The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

    Management Performance Hub:

    The Management Performance Hub (MPH) provides analytics solutions tailored to address complex management and policy questions enabling improved outcomes for Hoosiers. We partner with state agencies to leverage data in innovative ways to facilitate data-driven decision-making and data-informed policymaking.

    Role Overview:

    The Communications Intern plays a key role in helping the Communications and Marketing Division share the story of Indiana’s data‑driven decision‑making, open data initiatives, and the real‑world impact of our work. In this role, you’ll support day‑to‑day communications activities aligned with our broader editorial strategy and gain hands‑on experience creating engaging, platform‑specific content.

     

    We’re looking for a digitally savvy communicator to assist with both internal and external messaging. This includes project‑based work across social media, email marketing, web content development, video production, graphic design, layout, writing, and editing. The MPH Communications Intern will report to the Communications Director and collaborate closely with team members across the agency.

    Salary:

    The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

    Location:

    This position is located at the Indiana Government Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

     

    A Day in the Life:

    The essential functions of this role are:

    + Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study

    + Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline

    + Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations

    + Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects

    + Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

    + Develop content and digital materials for internal and external marketing campaigns

    + Craft engaging social media posts for agency’s Twitter and LinkedIn accounts

    + Develop and edit content for placement on agency website using content management system

    + Produce well-written, concise content for agency emails, reports and policies

    + Edit compelling, shareable online video using new and/or stock footage

    + Manage strategic schedules and task assignments for agency email campaigns

    + Assist with the production of e-newsletters for internal and external audiences

    + Monitor analytics to refine newsletter and other email communications

    What You'll Need for Success:

    + Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

    + Working knowledge using computer languages (R, Python, SQL, etc.) to manipulate and draw insights from large data sets as well develop software for automation.

    + Academic work in related field.

    + Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    + Ability to analyze datasets related to discipline.

    + Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels.

    + Ability to conduct well-informed research.

    + Ability to solve complex, critical problems.

    + Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures.

    + Broad knowledge of statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications.

    + Strong understanding of relational and dimensional databases, theories, principles, and practices.

    + Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities.

    + Must have solid foundation of critical thinking skills.

    + Strong written/oral communication and presentation skills.

    + Resourceful self-starter and highly motivated team player.

    + Able to perform well in a fast-paced environment.

    + Experience with data manipulation to include cleansing, standardizing, and transforming.

    + Experience with the following concepts or tools is not a requirement but considered a plus (geocoding and geospatial data, shiny, network diagraming, neo4j, Docker, Kubernetes).

    + Knowledge in how to generate and distribute visualizations to a broad range of audiences.

    + Effective communicator and someone who enjoys getting to understand nuances of a problem.

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
