    About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

    The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

    Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):

    Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

    Role Overview:

    This position is in IDEM’s Recycling, Education, and Quality Assurance Section within the Office of Program Support. Staff is responsible for the agency’s Quality Management System, environmental education and outreach, recycling education and outreach and the administration of the electronic waste and recycling market development programs. This position will assist in providing technical assistance and support in developing activities that work to reduce solid waste disposal. This includes assisting Indiana residents and businesses with developing or improving recycling and household hazardous waste services. This position will assist with providing recycling education presentations, environmental outreach, and workshops for schools, youth camps, community groups, and teachers.

    Hourly Rate:

    The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

    Essential Duties/Responsibilties:

    + Assist with the development of outreach materials for general recycling, household hazardous waste, food waste programs and initiatives, and pharmaceutical waste management.

    + Assist with providing outreach at various outreach events, conferences, and workshops.

    + Develop database of statewide municipal curbside recycling programs.

    + Research data to create or update agency recycling fact sheets.

    + Review, manage, and update information in recycling and drop-off locations databases.

    + Provide assistance to schools, non-profits, and local communities with establishing and maintaining recycling education programs.

    + Assist with planning and organizing a teacher training workshop and summer environmental education program for schools, summer camps, and libraries.

    + Assist with assembling outreach presentation kits and materials.

    + Assist with other program projects, as assigned

    Job Requirements:

    An environmental background is not required but the intern will have the opportunity to learn about recycling, household hazardous waste, electronic waste, and waste diversion.

     

    + Ability to reasonably research and learn industry best practices.

    + Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet searches and basic internet use is required.

    + Ability to compose correspondence on varied topics including letters, e-mails, forms, surveys, etc. -

    + Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.

    + Expected to be dependable, capable of making decisions, have the ability to work without close supervision, and be self motivated.

    + Ability to work well in a team-setting.

    + Minimal travel and occasional weekends may be require

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
