    POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

    + This position is hybrid (some teleworking allowed), full-time, following a first shift schedule, Monday - Friday, with flexible hours between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, and 35 hours per week.

    + This position will be based out of DEEP Headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut.

    + As an Environmental Trainee in the SMMPP Division, tasks may include assistance with activities to implement the State’s Commercial Organics Recycling Law; management and coordination of GIS data-based work; statistical analyses; and other related duties.

    + This is a one to three-year training classification and upon successful completion of the training period, the incumbents will be promoted to an Environmental Analyst 1.

     

    Salary Note: During the first year of training, Environmental Trainees with a Bachelor's degree earn $47,229 per year, and Environmental Trainees with a Master's degree earn $48,933 per year.

    Within the Bureau of Materials Management & Compliance Assurance (MMCA), our mission is to work to ensure the proper management - handling, use, recycling and disposal - of materials including municipal solid waste, recyclable materials, pesticides, mercury, PCBs, and petroleum products. Through a number of different mechanisms - outreach and education, product handling efforts and phase outs, training, and regulatory activity - the Department is working to develop better stewardship of these materials to protect environmental quality and public safety for Connecticut's current and future generations.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In a state agency receives training in introductory professional environmental work for the development of technical and professional skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the professional environmental work of the agency; performs a wide variety of increasing difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during the course of the training period.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a scientific or technical discipline pertaining to the environmental field including the biological, earth, or physical sciences; environmental planning; environmental law; geographic information systems; geography with a concentration in geographic information systems; environmental or natural sciences; environmental studies; or natural resources.

    + Experience or education working with the principles and practices of sustainable materials management (SMM), including with laws, regulations or policies pertaining to SMM;

    + Experience or training with communicating environmental results and conclusions verbally and in writing to peers, supervisors, government officials, environmental professionals, or public audiences;

    + Experience or education in researching, evaluating and analyzing reports and data;

    + Experience working with a team to perform environmental or scientific research or projects;

    + Experience working on two or more projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines; and

    + Experience using computer software including Microsoft Office products or geographic information systems (GIS) to manage project workflows and review, analyze, model or present environmental data.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from on site environments and moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
