ABOUT THE POSITION
The Clark County Fire Department, Fire Prevention Bureau is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Fire Department Protection Engineer position. As a member of our team, you will provide technical review and consultation on all aspects of fire and life safety, specifically as it relates to fire and building codes and National Fire Protection Association standards. The ideal candidate will have experience reviewing technical documents and construction plans to provide guidance on proposed design solutions. Exceptional analytical skills, as well as report writing and research skills is required.
This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

Applicants for this role must possess valid registration at the time of application as a professional Fire Protection Engineer from any state recognized by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Applications submitted without a copy of candidates' Fire Protection Engineer registration are incomplete and will not be considered.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in an applicable engineering discipline from an accredited college or university AND four (4) years of professional level design, plan check and inspection work in the fire and life safety specialty discipline.
All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application. Working Conditions: Work with potential exposure to hazards at various construction sites or facilities.
Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license. Must possess valid registration at the time of application as a professional Fire Protection Engineer from any state recognized by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
+ Confers with County and Fire staff regarding County and Fire physical facility project requirements and private building requirements, including fire and life safety access and protection, hazardous occupancies, code requirements and related matters.
+ Provides technical expertise of a consultive nature to County and Fire plan checkers, engineers, fire and building inspectors and other County and Fire staff.
+ Reviews plans and other written documentation for new construction, modifications and retrofitting for fire and life safety systems and hazardous occupancy requirements; ensures that plans meet federal, state and local codes and regulations; makes recommendations for materials and equipment alternatives to meet codes and regulations.
+ Performs field inspections and witnesses tests and tests of new and existing fire protection, hazardous materials and similar systems and equipment for code and specification adherence and proper operation.
+ Provides information regarding fire, life safety and hazardous materials issues to Fire staff, contractors, developers, engineers, architects and the public; responds to and resolves public complaints regarding issues in areas of expertise.
+ Responds to emergencies and provides fire protection/hazardous materials knowledge and expertise in order to mitigate the incident.
+ Develops standard operating procedures, operating manuals, training programs and technical documentation for plan checking, building inspection, fire inspection and fire suppression staff; provides information to other County and Fire departments and local agencies regarding fire, life safety and hazardous materials issues.
+ Monitors developments in the construction field, including building materials, construction techniques and code and regulation changes; evaluates their effect upon County and Fire activities; makes code, regulation and procedural recommendations.
+ Conducts technical training/exercises in fire protection/hazardous materials matters.
+ Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
+ Maintains accurate records; prepares a variety of periodic and special reports, correspondence and other written materials.
+ Drives a personal or County motor vehicle to attend meetings and inspect various building and facility sites.
+ Uses standard office equipment, including a computer terminal, in the course of the work.
+ May direct the work of staff or professional service contractors on a project basis.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Mobility to work in a typical office setting, use standard office equipment and to drive a motor vehicle in order to visit work sites; strength and stamina to inspect various projects and facilities, often in inaccessible areas; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
