    GENERAL SUMMARY

    This position works collaboratively with other mathematics faculty and instructors in a diverse, urban setting and reports directly to the co-chairs of the mathematics department. Effective interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills are essential. CCD seeks faculty with strong teaching skills to engage its diverse students using an array of instructional methods and tools (e.g. project-based learning, flipped classroom, innovative use of technology, implementation of open educational resources, competency-based education, etc.). The college encourages creativity and supports faculty to implement cutting-edge methods to improve student learning. CCD's rigorous learning environment fosters a community of lifelong learners who demonstrate critical thinking, cultural competence, and ethical responsibility.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

    PRIMARY DUTIES

    The primary duty for this position is teaching mathematics from the developmental level through differential equations, and a full course load equals 18 work units (equivalent to 15 lecture credits) per semester. However, faculty must demonstrate commitment to student success beyond the classroom and devote some of their professional time to service activities in the college as a component of shared governance. This position and the assigned salary are based on a 9-month contractual period that is paid over 12 months. The position offers the potential for, but no guarantee of, additional assignments for pay during the course of the non-contractual working days.

    The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other mathematics faculty to:

    Teaching-Related

     

    + Deliver content and facilitate student learning of assigned courses in a dynamic environment that engages students

    + Design and update class websites on the college’s learning management system with the assistance of the department’s course captains.

    + Evaluate student mastery of course content by conducting regular assessments and providing timely feedback.

    + Maintain accurate student records.

    + Be available outside of the classroom for student meetings.

    + Utilize retention strategies to maximize student success.

    + Engage in department and college responsibilities and initiatives, including efforts to maintain departmental coherence across CCD’s many instructional venues (i.e. on campus, online asynchronously or synchronously, hybrid, hyflex, and/or concurrent enrollment)

     

    Service-Related

     

    + Attend department, pathway, college, and system-wide meetings.

    + Serve on department, pathway, college, and system-wide committees.

    + Participate in required professional development.

    + Contribute to the professional development of adjunct instructors (e.g., hiring, mentoring, observing in classrooms, etc.)

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:(Required)

    To teach MAT 0250, MAT 0300, or any supplemental academic instruction (SAI) MAT course:

    + Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, actuarial science, applied mathematics, computer science, data science, economics, engineering, operational research, physics, or another related field

    To teach MAT 1075, MAT 1085, MAT 1120, MAT 1140, MAT 1150, MAT 1160, MAT 1220, MAT 1230, MAT 1240, MAT 1260, MAT 1320, MAT 1340, MAT 1400, MAT 1420, MAT 1440, MAT 2075, MAT 2085, MAT 2410, MAT 2420, MAT 2430, MAT 2431, MAT 2540, MAT 2560, or MAT 2562:

    + Master’s degree in mathematics or statistics

    Also allowed:

    + Any master’s degree with a combination of 18 graduate credits in mathematics and/or statistics

    Experience: (Required)

    Tested Professional Experience:

    + Candidates can fulfill the tested professional experience by having a bachelor’s degree in any field and showcasing at least 4000 hours within the last 7 years of substantial work and ongoing engagement in mathematics or statistics. This experience can be evidenced through expertise gained from a combination of various activities, including advanced mathematics-related certification, professional consultation, research, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, curriculum development, teaching, or training.

     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (Required)

     

    + Effective oral and written communication skills

    + Ability to work effectively as a member of a team

    + Ability to work with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.)

    + Ability to use a variety of web conferencing platforms (e.g. Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)

    + PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education: (Preferred)

    + Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics OR any Ph.D. with a combination of 18 graduate credits in mathematics and/or statistics

    Experience:(Preferred)

    + Experience teaching mathematics in a high school, community college, four-year college, or university setting

    + Experience with educational innovation

    + Experience teaching in a diverse, urban setting

    + Experience with teaching practices informed to equitably serve students from varied backgrounds

    + Experience implementing current pedagogy for community college mathematics

    + Experience with first-time, first-generation college students

    + Experience with non-traditional college students

    + Experience teaching online

    + Experience with competency-based education

     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:(Preferred)

     

    + Ability to work with Desire2Learn, Banner, and/or EAB Navigate

    + Ability to work with HTML and LaTeX

    + Fluency in Spanish
