We are seeking a **_Sr. Instrument Designer_** . This position serves the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor Project in several ways. It designs, builds, and maintains telescope control systems; validates the telescope optics by designing, executing, and analyzing calibration measurements. Contributes writing and figures about these measurements to our technical and scientific publications.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
_Field Operations_
+ Provide remote support for field staff.
+ Monitor telescope performance.
_Telescope Installation & Commissioning_
+ Assist in installing control systems for new telescopes.
+ Execute initial calibrations (See “Calibrate Telescopes”)
+ Establish pointing solutions for new telescopes.
_Calibrate Telescopes_
+ Calibration Design: Design observations of the moon, planets, and artificial calibrators for pointing and focusing of telescopes.
+ Calibration Measurements: Carry out calibration observations.
+ Data Analysis: Analyze data from calibration observations to obtain pointing solutions.
_Technical/Scientific Publications_
+ Contribute writing and figures to technical/scientific publications about calibration measurement.
_Collaboration_
+ Maintain daily on-line with team.
+ Attend weekly general collaboration meetings and bi-weekly telescope site meetings for overall coordination
Technical Qualifications & Specialized Certifications
+ Expertise in control systems, optical validation, software, safety protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
+ Five years related experience, with advance knowledge in instrumentation machining.
+ Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Physics.
+ Ten years of experience in the development and maintenance of radio telescope instrumentation, power, monitoring, and control systems, including five or more years of experience in computational analysis of some form of radio telescope data.
+ Programming experience of real-time systems used for telescope control.
