ASE is looking to hire a telecommunications engineer with specialization in RF engineering to support the research, development, and evaluation of next-generation communication and sensing technologies for modern maritime surveillance and detection. This Hybrid position requires that you live within commuting distance from Alexandria, VA.

Responsibilities

+ The Engineers will develop, model, and evaluate sensor technologies designed to detect and characterize broad-spectrum RF signals. Research, design, and implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for RF signal classification, anomaly detection, feature extraction, and automated decision-making.

+ Apply traditional signal processing techniques—such as filtering, spectral analysis, modulation/demodulation, and detection theory—to support robust RF system performance.

+ Design, test, and optimize RF transmission devices, including antennas, front-end components, and wireless communication subsystems.

+ Build simulation environments and prototypes to analyze system performance across diverse RF environments and threat scenarios.

+ Strong understanding of RF transmission devices, antenna systems, and RF hardware architectures that applies to the Coast Guard maritime environment.

+ Collaborate on a cross functional team at the intersection of RF engineering, advanced signal processing, and intelligent sensing systems, developing cutting-edge concepts and prototypes to enhance the Coast Guard’s maritime surveillance mission.

+ Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including software engineers, data scientists, and systems engineers, to integrate RF sensing and processing capabilities into larger system architectures.

+ Document research findings, system designs, and engineering analyses for internal and external stakeholders.

+ Stay current with emerging technologies in wideband sensing, cognitive radio, AI/ML signal processing, and advanced communication systems and relevant industry standards.

+ Conduct technical assessments, feasibility studies, and performance evaluations of RF systems and subsystems.

+ Produce technical reports and recommendations, system models, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders to improve maritime domain surveillance requirements.

+ Lead a laboratory setting to test and investigate new technologies with the intent for immediate insertion into operational environments either land, sea or air.

+ May lead, develop, or oversee development of, systems requirements, design, documentation, algorithms, software implementation, hardware layout, integration, installation, analysis, and peripheral interfaces.

+ May contribute to the generation, oversight, test and evaluation plans, and execution of those plans when necessary.

+ Responsible for exercising independent judgment, as well as a high level of analytical skill, in solving maritime surveillance problems, and documenting and communicating results at all levels.

+ Recommendations of system upgrades, additions, or removal is dependent upon the approval of the USCG.

+ Conduct periodic technical exchange meetings (TEMS) with Coast Guard for collaborative development sessions, program reviews, and design reviews.

+ Support development of all technical documentation required by C5ISC SELC processes.

+ Reports (STR) IAW current USCG processes as required.

+ Provide input as requested by the USCG in the development of Engineering Change documentation.

+ Attend quarterly program management and technical working group meetings as directed.

+ Provide formal reports on any deficiencies identified as directed by the COR.

+ Review for accuracy reports and documentation delivered as directed by the COR.

Qualifications

+ Must be a US Citizen able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.

+ Four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited university in the field of Communications Engineering.

+ Four (4) years of experience including telecommunications engineering support for shipboard and shore stations with at least four (4) of the following equipment/systems/programs: MF, HF, VHF, UHF, and SATCOM Systems (including high and low power), US/NATO Secure Voice Systems, DGPS Radio Beacon Transmitters, telephone systems, IP-PBX, switches, and RADHAZ/EMI control measures.

+ Must have experience and understand the landscape of the current Coast Guard maritime domain awareness technologies to optimize RF transmission devices, antennas, and front-end RF hardware.

+ Must possess demonstrated knowledge of telecommunications installation requirements and procedures as well as equipment procurement, production, and installation experience.

+ A current System Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) or equivalent certification is required. Additional specific information assurance certification requirements may be required at the task order level.

+ Experience with signals Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Coast Guard RF technologies or other military RF technologies.

+ Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
